Underage drinking, and the drinking age.

Hey, i know that we're always told underage drinking is bad and shown all these propaganda images about what could happen to us if we do it. I'm just wondering what your personal thoughts are on what the drinking age should be,
1 - 18 like in Australia
2 - 21 like in USA
3 - no drinking age
4 - 16 +
Please post why you chose what you chose.

Also i'm interested to hear your stories both horror and happy about your underage drinking experiences, if you have any.

I belive the drinking age should be 16 for drinking in a house I.E a house party and 18 to drink in a pub/club.

 

Well, I'm from Ireland, and although we have a reputation for being heavy drinkers , I have to say that 18+ is a wise decision by the government. I think any younger than that, it would be difficult to make a true informed decision. At the ages of 18+ peer pressure becomes less and less, and the strain on academics etc. becomes less, so over indulgence has less of an effect on your life (apart from the odd hangover at work)

 

Yeah but that could turn out more dangerous, as pubs ect the persons drinking can be monitored, at home it is entirely up to the person, and also i pmed a global thanks

I think 18+ is also a good idea but drinking ages don't really solve much when liquor stores still openly sell to underage people. I think that ages like 16 people are still out to impress their mates by drinking as much as they can, i'm 16 and from Australia and i know afew to many people who are like that

 

Yeah I agree, there should be more stringent ID checks, it was the same when tobacco was available at 16+, there were kids at 12 able to purchase it, but now I see compulsory ID checks implemented. And yeah, there are a minority of people like that, and I'm sorry to say at 18+, that minority tend to remain the same.

 

Yeah, in Australia, they just made learners permits unable to be scratched ( a way to change the age) by making them out of a different material. They also made it so that IDs at most licensed venues have to be scanned to try to avoid fakes being used. It's just too easy for fake documents to be obtained

 

Correct me if I'm wrong, but you're allowed to drink at any age in your own home.

 

Germany... And there is a drinking age in Germany.

I'm 16 my parents let me drink a fair amount. They won't let me get smashed at home but they'll happily let me have a couple of glasses of wine and/or a few beers.

I have 18+ friends, and a lot of my friends brothers are 18+ so I have no trouble getting them to get alcohol when I go out.

 

I don't even want an age limit on drinking. It's your own business if you drink. It's your fault if you get drunk. It's your fault what you DO when you're drunk.

So I say, no limit. You can be 14 and drink, in my opinion. As long as you know what you're doing.

 

Yeah Kadaj, that's a loophole in the law, illegal to purchase until a certain age, but in your own home you are able to drink at any time. Which I have to say I tend to agree with, as in your own home, you wouldn't have the same inclination to get wasted, but maybe a couple of drinks to wind down. Also if you're living with parents/roomates, others are there to moderate consumption.

 

In germany there are Certain drinks that have no age on them.

well technically it's private property so you can, but your parents / guardians would get in trouble if things go too far for allowing underage drinking to go on, this happened many times in Australia and is often in the news

I agree with that to an extent. It's a good theory but some people would abuse it.

Everybody should be able to drink, doesn't matter anyways because most shops will still sell to kids who are underage or they can get anyone else to buy it...

If police catch you out then they only confiscate the alcohol so it's basically a no loss situation! so pretty much makes this a dumb debate...

This is a discussion about what the LEGAL age for drinking should be. So no, it isn't a dumb debate.

 

Lowering the drinking age is a horrible idea. There already enough horrific events that happen illegally due to the alcohol.

Pulling the "If they do it illegally it probably wasn't just alcohol." card will only make your argument worse.

Alcohol is one of the worst drugs on the market. Making it more accessible would - consequently - increase the number of alcohol related deaths for no intelligible reason at all.

Oh, and 16+ are you joking? Here lets give the freshly licensed drivers some alcohol. Really?

 

Thats from wiki about the UK. So the UK is in pretty much the same situation.

 

Personally I think the reason behind underage drinking is Alcohol advertisements (should be banned just like tobacco), and cost of alcohol, here I've noticed the price dropping alot, and many deals, like right how you can get 3 cases of beer, eg. 18 cans or 20 bottles PER CASE for £20 or $29, that's just ridiculous.
