    Isn't gif a lower quality of image? I use .png for everything on my websites, except for imageready's iron first which forces me to use gif/jpg ;_;

    The deciding of which to use depends on the job, if you want to make a picture that has very few colors used, save it as GIF and you'll have a very small filesize, whereas if you have alot of colors, use PNG. When it comes to transparency it depends again on the job, if it requires the use of per-pixel transparency, use PNG, if you can get away with not needed it to be per-pixel transparency (if you've got a picture anti-aliased to white, and your site has a white background or something) use gif.
