Using USB to make your laptop/pc run faster?

Is this possible? I've heard it was but wanted to make sure before i look like a nob buying USB's to put in my laptop for no reason rofl.

If it doesn't make it faster, does it do anything apart from allowing you to put stuff in it?

There's an option where if you put an USB with (example: 32gigs) it can improve in the speed of processes or something in that nature, never tried it before.

All it does is slightly help some speed in memory. Like saving cached files in a fake ram. It really doesn't help all that much.

Hmm, what if I bought like 2TB external memory, would that help with any speed or anything?

    Disagreed.
Using a 4gb memorystick on my shit minilaptop makes it 4x faster.

While this doesn't mean a whole lot for good computers, it does help slightly if you've got a keen eye.

Better off just upgrading your internal hardware if the USB stick or whatever is going to be in your laptop permanently.

It's called readyboost... And I would imagine the most efficient of this would be on a USB 3.0. Very fast speeds across USB 3.0 - However, as CAS_M said... it does improve older netbooks, etc.

Simply put, when you first plug in a flash drive the auto-play menu pops up.

    See the wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ReadyBoost

If you want significant speed boosts consider more memory or a faster harddrive. Even delegating files to an external harddrive and keeping your internal free will speed up internal program loading times and boot times.

I would recommend just moving all movies/other stuff to the external, and use them from there, and just keep the free space on your internal.

sounds to me like its used as if it is another hard drive, which i think is how smart cache/ready boost type technology is used.

Using USB to make your laptop/pc run faster?

I'm assuming we are here talking about speed transferring files... If so then yes a newer USB 3.0 compatible flash drive will boost the speed at which data can be written and read from a external source...

If we are talking about speed like boot speed, internet, games, etc.... Then this is by far the dumbest thing I've ever heard.... The ONLY way to EVER make a computer operate faster is to upgrade the internal components and by optimization of programs. In the real world, the more USB drives you have in your system, the SLOWER it goes... Reason is: the system keeps checking if said device is requesting information/processes...
