Your looking at the African American gangs for example Crips and Bloods, there are many other gangs....examples:

    Eighteenth Street (All Nationalities)
    Westside Locos (Mexican)
    La Eme (Mexican Mafia)
    Armenian Power
    Toonerville

many other cliques and such...the term gangster is used in these gangs...they use the terms:

OG - Original member of the gang
    Banger - Gang Member

    Turf wars: stupid
    Drug wars: stupid
    "Blood in-blood out" wars: stupid
    Money wars: stupid

Only gang wars that I have a *tiny* amount for respect for is the war on pride. Many of the people in these gangs have had everything taken away from them; their families, their education opportunities, etc. The only thing they are able to maintain is a sense of pride/courage, and they are willing to defend the only thing that they are able to keep their emotional attachment to - their sense of "brotherhood" and "pride."

But that's just my two cents. Yes, it's thrown around way too often.

Your idea of a gangster seems to be the classic Cosa Nostra. These mobsters have been glorified because they express a code of honor. What most people forget is, they committed brutal, horrifying, cold blooded murders just like the gangs of today. Sure, they might have had a code of morals and honor that would seem respectable to everyday people, but they killed just like gangs such as bloods/crips. I suppose getting to your direct question, the term is not overused by direct denotation. However, with your connotation of gangster meaning classical Cosa Nostra mafioso, then it is.

True, but they are legal, and ridiculously paid.
    :p
It's overused in every country I have friends in.
    I'd want to watch.
Not all, there are remnants of a Russian mob family still.
Most people that don;'t turn to a gang because of needing to survive it's because they want the new cd's, shoes, chains,. etc.

    Seriously?
Risking your life for a necklace and some shoes?
Be better off on suicide watch.
True, I hate people that HAVE to have a weapon/4 people with them.

I carry a knife, but that's only because I know I'd get jumped by 3-4+, not one.
    bloods/crips only care about.
    money
    territory.
    Bragging rights.

    That's childish.
I love seeing wannabes run in pants that are way to baggy, it amuses me and all I got to do is lightly jog.
True, but as I stated before, these kids could be a new "genre".
But in that case, all new gangster movies are going to suck and I'll be bored.

    Nazi's, rofl.
Since when did they become a gang?
All Nazi's are are idiots who think skin color and religions give you authority.
    That's unorganized idiocy.
Pride can be seen from two ways here, your evrsion of pride you stated I would fight for.
    Definitely.

But what I was stating was like pride as in.
"I'm better than all of you."
I guess defending your ego would have been better wording.
    Al Capone for example.
He started food kitchens for the poor, donated to charity's, ordered executions, did executions, etc.
But he had an organized, respectable way.
It's not like today's idiot gangsters that would kill someone for stepping on their shoe, or looking at them wrong.
Which is what you see daily today.

ROFL. I don't really think he could have worded it any better, just read the thread and replies...he's basically saying that the word gangster is given to too many people, and the title in it of itself is quite stupid.

yeah the kids who call them selves "gangsters" now a days are those stupid ******s that sit around on the street with stolen uzis and handguns and think their cool by mugging people. My opinion of a true gangster would be Al compone and the italian mafia not some lowlifes on the street. :D oh and will i get in trouble for saying ******? lol

Everyone's like "I'm a g". Who wants to be a gangster? You kill people to put food on the table and actually live in the real ghetto. When people have everything going for them, they don't join gangs. They join them because they have to.

I think the Gangsters have moved on from having a family and a don, do just being in poor neighborhoods and wearing their pants low and stuff like that. As opposed to the suit and hat mafia guys. Also they got alot of slang goin' on. "I'll put a cap in yo ass"

"Gangster" is way overused, yes. The street kids need to stop acting like them. The black, white, and asian kids need to stop to. NOT TRYING TO BE RACIST HERE PEOPLE JUST STATING THE FACTS ALRIGHT! They are just really annoying with their "YO YO YO HOMIE!!!" That gets old.

In my opinion, the word gangster, relative to the Italian mobs of the early 20th century, the word gangster has become increasingly stereotypical. Particularly because it is a word that is most commonly associated with a certain group of people. I'd rather not say what groups specifically, nonetheless, we know what these groups may be. In doing so, the word becomes associated with more people and carries a more derogatory connotation, therefore causing overuse.

Empirically, a gangster image has been increasingly becoming part of popular culture.

Essentially, it's a classification of those who act ignorantly in order to mimic those who are actually ignorant, those belonging to a certain social group (enabling the term with a negative connotation), those who participate in a popular culture of society, and so on. Neverthless, it can be seen that gangster is indeed being overused by its application to more and more concepts.

That's pretty ironic, considering that the true 'gangsters' are the Russian Crime Syndicate (pretty much 100% white), the Japanese Yakuza and the Italian Mob (also pretty much 100% white). These are all multi-billion agencies; not just some street thug who deals crack around the corner and hauls in a few hundred bucks a day.

A lot of people I know call all the black kids at our school gangster. So yeah, it's become a term for black people (at least where I live).
