To Go To College VS Making Millions Of $$

I live in the middle east, in a country called Oman, and I graduated from Highschool. My dad owns a business here, and makes a couple million dollars a year. My question is, should I go to the closest American University, (Which is in Dubai, UAE), which is a 1 hour flight (5 hours by road), and study business administration? Or Should I join my dads business without getting a degree and make around $5-6m a year.

Is education overated? If I choose to stay in Oman, I could always do an evening (Part Time) college.

To be very honest, the only reason I want to go to Dubai is to make friends and have a good time...is it worth it?

wasn't there a thread exactly like this already....

But join your dads business, you can always learn independently.
Or go to college for the fun of it

College is worth it, there is no such thing as useless knowledge.

If your dad's business is secure and it's not going to suddenly collapse, then go for it.

If not, then go to college so that you have a back up plan.

Might want to just go to college to have fun, learn, before you join the work force and commit to working 9-5.

Read carefully what I am going to write:

I am currently studying Bussiness administration (no bs) in a pretty decent university where I live, one of the best I would say. My uncle owns a company aswell, it goes fine I guess, however there is one thing that you should note, that the company can be making even 10m a year and the next year can suddenly collapse. You might be wondering how could this possibly happen? Well mate, the answer is that you never know the policies that the goberment will take, for example in Argentina; The country was fine until the president decided to block the dollars, this was instantly, and it generated a lot of inflation from a sudden causing the rupture of many companies.

I would suggest you that you go for the bussines administration as it is a carreer (personal experience) that has a lot of opportunities in the global market and even if that company collapses you can be hired by another. All this, without mentioning all the new friendships you will make and all the awesome and interesting people you will get to know.

Plus mate, keep dreaming if you think you will be making that amount of money just like that, you won't be making that unless you achieve a high-rank position.

Is online school not an option? Why not have the best of both worlds: work for you dad and get an online degree in the meantime? With the money you make, you can afford taking internet classes from a reputable college anywhere in the world. Countries and nationalities in the world of colleges/universities are no barrier when you can make 5-6 million dollars a year.

So no, I figure online classes are not an option.

I'm assuming your dad will keep this business and you're on good terms with him.

That being said, why not go to college, have fun, meet people... you can even get a lot of business contacts / customers that may become a valuable asset to your business. All you need to do is work for a month and you'll be able to afford college yourself.

Then no, college isn't worth it if all you want to do is sight-see and socialize.

    I disagree.

College, in my life so far, has been one of the most social and fun experiences of my entire life.

Considering he has the money and seems to be pretty enclosed and bored where he is at now, I'd say the very opposite - it is 100% the best option for you and totally worth it! ^_^

You don't claim to be heir to a multimillion dollar corporation though, yours and my situation aren't the same as the OPs. If he honestly could make millions of dollars per year, why waste your time meeting idiotic (and broke) kids and wasting time at school when you could be making money, meeting quality people, and tucking away money for doing whatever the fuck you want later in life?

The college social life IS fun, but personally if I had money, I would choose to work, save money, travel the world, meet the most diverse people, and THEN come back to some sort of education

Holy crap guys. I think people that dont go to college shouldn't even post here.

I am currently studying bussiness administration (OP) and I am not bullshitting. I enjoy the carreer and its very interesting if you like economy and numbers.

If your plan is to go to college just for the social life then fuck off and go to work, you dont go to college to waste time.

If you can make the money you say you can then yes college is not for you. It's going to be near impossible to get anywhere even close to that salary from any post graduate entry level job. If at all in your entire career.
To make that much you would need to join your dads company anyway and if you don't need the degree, why waste a few years getting it. You will learn a lot from the pure experience of working.

Personally with the volume of money your talking about I view this thread as more of a troll and don't believe you for a second but I posted a serious reply anyway.

What's stopping you from going to college first and joining the company after? That'd be your best option.

This exact same thing was posted like 3 months ago. But if your dads business is stable, go to college, then comeback and work there and make millions.

Except that the American University in Dubai isn't for poor, idiotic kids. Lot of the kids come from wealthy families. OP may not even like working for his dad, better to get the degree, figure out what the career is like, and then decide to work for his dad or work for someone else. His dad is obviously well connected and could find another job for him in a different career if didn't like what he would be doing with his dad.

Plus, the amount of people that actually return to college after entering the real world is extremely slim. Most don't have the funds (not his problem), don't want to be the 30-40 year old in the class, or just had too much fun. Of course, that's not necessarily a bad reason to not go, but the fact that he won't have a degree isn't the best idea when you're in the real world regardless of your dad's company.

Companies can go south fast. Perfect example is my neighbor.

He was making 800k a year, had a nice house, couple nice cars, was the Senior VP for the Midwest for his branch of Citigroup. Basically had the job for life and could move up as long as he kept on performing at the same level.

Except, the economic slump we're in came around, the Citigroup couldn't keep his branch, sold the branch to GE (General Electric) and they ended up not being able to afford the branch so they just dropped everyone. Including the Senior VP who he thought was locked into 800k+ a year for life.

The guy is back on his feet because of his education and contacts he made during his tenure, but if he didn't have the education and started to job hunt, he'd be out of the 800k+ salary range. Sure, he would get a job, but no where near 800k+ a year.

No question about it: college. I'm sure you'll have your chance in your dad's business in the future. It's not like he'll cut you off for getting an education.

    damn the OP is lucky

if your dad's company is stable, go to college

if its potentially unstable , pocket the 6 mil, and if it collapses you can go to college and continue increasing your wealth.
