I Can tell you were I'm not...
Is it really necessary to try and convince everyone else of atheism? If people believe in religion, then they believe (in most cases) that there is something better after death. Why ruin (in your opinion) their ignorance, and in turn, bliss and make life much more depressing for them? It is comforting to people to believe that this life isn't it, why try to take that away from them?

If your an atheist who minds your own business and doesn't argue against religion, you have earned my respect.

Also, what do you have to lose in believing in a higher power (example: God)? This is supposed to be a serious question, and answers like "because religion is stupid" or "science proves otherwise" are not welcome.
 
This is very easy to answer. It is purely because religion is bad for our race, plain and simple. There have been no technological or species advancing discoveries made in the name of religion. Why? Because they're just here so they can die and go have a life after death.

No one who believes in a stable afterlife really cares about future generations or the advancement of the human species. They're simple minded baboons who are self-centered in everything they do, yet proclaim to be doing good, whether they admit it or not.

Atheism promotes the search for the truth, regardless of whether or not you like the answer you receive. Most Atheists are content in life, and will do anything they can to help contribute in a positive manner with truly pure motives. It also is a stable way for people to unite and cast out ignorance and the prevarications that prevent our race from accelerating.

But, this is not to the point. A large number of current Atheists do not disbelieve in deities, they just have a strong hatred for a religion that believes in one. Most of them are basing their beliefs on this hatred, rather than on the solid facts. There's nothing wrong with that, however, as all religion should be abolished.

Religion continues to be a burden on humans, for, from the days of the pharaoh's who used their positions as "gods" to force people into labor, to modern times where the pope, uses his position of god's representative on earth to condemn the use of condoms, and spread false information regarding them in societies that are facing a large-scale AIDS epidemic, religion is and has been consistently used as a decisive force.

For anybody who knows full well the lunacy of the very idea of religion, and the appalling events that have transpired as a result of its existence, to not speak out against it, and to keep your silence would be a very bad thing indeed.

As for the "atheism is depressing" nonsense that you are promoting, why? Why does the existence of a magical man in the sky who cares about your personal affairs make life enjoyable to live? How does a deity who has no problem wiping out thousands of people at a time give anybody any sense of security? Why does such a repulsive figure get people's respect, and how does it inspire them to do any good at all? How is a disbelief in such an unpleasant delusion depressing at all? If anything, a disbelief in a god is liberating; it frees us to pursue our desires, frees us to enjoy our lives, and abolishes any bronze-age customs that we still practice out of superstitious ignorance.

I'm not promoting religion at all, I'm not even saying atheism is depressing. However, going your whole life believing that you will not cease to exist after you die, and that there is an afterlife that is enjoyable, and then suddenly not believing it anymore is extremely depressing.

You discredit religion and wave it off like it is pure ignorance. This IS NOT a religion vs. atheism thread. There are plenty of those. You have every right to find people's image of god "repulsing", but that doesn't mean you need to preach about your disbelief.

I'm going to pretend I'm atheist for a second. Let's compare religion to Santa. Children believe in Santa, and it gives them joy, comfort, and faith. To tell an innocent child that Santa doesn't exist after they already believe in him is heartbreaking and depressing for them. You took away that magic and wonder from them. (Disregard the fact that as an adult you know there isn't a Santa with 100% certainty.)
Why take that away from a child? If they want to believe in something better and larger-than-life, let them. They're not hurting anyone. They're just believing in something to give them comfort, even if it isn't real.


Also, you act like all religions believe that God just lets things like war, AIDS, and genocides happen because he doesn't care, and therefore is not someone that brings comfort by believing in. I myself do not believe any of that, and I'd be happy to discuss my religion with you if you have any questions, privately. I want to keep this thread on topic.

No, but is it necessary to try and convince everyone else into religion. For example, Jehovas witnesses. They wander around stopping people on the street and TRY TO FORCE everyone into religion. /discuss.

I just can't believe in God. Maybe that's because I've lived in atheistic family, or because there large wars going on about religions between Iraq, Iran etc.
Because you don't accept "science proves otherwise" as an answer, you just prove us that you can't face the facts.
 
In my opinion isn't trying to convince some one that there is no afterlife/god is like trying to save some one that most atheists hate?
 
I'm an Atheist. I don't intentionally argue religion but it usually arises by my Christian friends. I don't mind their beliefs but when they try to proselytize me to Christianity then that's when I justify Atheism. It usually unravels a somewhat lengthy argument which I enjoy participating in.

Hey. I don't try and "convince everyone else of atheism". I simply reject the claims made by theists. I am in a negative position, (as opposed to a positive position) ie. I am rejecting claims, not making my own and therefore I cannot be trying to "convince" anyone else of anything. Having said that, I will admit that I would rather the world be a more secular place as I think it would be more productive and there would be less violence.

You ask "What do you have to lose by believing in a higher power?" (and by "higher power" I assume you mean one of the common gods like the god of the bible etc.) Well maybe I have a lot to lose. Maybe there is a god that values rational and critical thinking and hates people who accept things on "faith" and punishes these people for not using their critical thinking skills. Maybe life is a test to see who is more rational than who. Also, believing in a god of one of the modern day religions commonly involves tithes (financial payment to the church) and also giving up a considerable amount of your time.

Wouldn't you rather the truth over comfortable delusions?

The president of the United States, and every president before him must have been a simple minded baboon. That's an ignorant statement. Many religious people have made discoveries and advancements.

Religion does more than just "feed people lies." Organized religion helps out the less fortunate every single day. Homeless people line up outside my church door every single day for groceries they can't afford so they can keep living. Organized religion set up soup kitchens across the world for the less fortunate.

Not one organized atheist group has done anything to provide for the less fortunate.
 
I'm atheist. I do argue about the politics within religion.
However I don't ever argue the core meaning behind people's religions.
I do believe some people in this world need faith to keep them going. So
you'll never hear me saying Jesus isn't real or anything like that. However I do
argue, and dislike the corruptions within SOME churches. I also don't like how Catholicism would and still does today adapt their religion to the popular person.

Anyways

People will always argue about religion. We will continue arguing until we have scientific fact just like everything else.
 
I want to clear something up....

Obviously if a religious person is trying to convert you (and they will, for they would like to "save" as many people as possible.) you have every right to tell them that you're atheist. However, this thread is for the people who would sit and argue with these people rather than simply telling them no thank you.

logically you should only be a Theist or an Agnostic as you either know he exists or you don't know, you cannot know he doesn't exist.
And they pretend they're logically superior.

Faith is illogical, anyone who makes a judgment based on faith is illogical. Therefore, atheists are logically superior to any theist. Your 'personal experiences' do not justify fact, as I have personally experienced happiness but I cannot prove that it in fact exists.

Agnostics assert that there probably is a creator, atheists assert that there probably isn't given that there is no proof. They do not say "No, there is most definitely no God." That is not an atheistic stand point. They say "There is probably no God."

Christians assert that there most definitely is a God, and agnostics assert that there probably is a God, but atheists assert that there probably isn't one.

Get your understanding corrected.


Another thing, an intelligent atheist will not try to disprove the existence of God, they will only try to disprove the validity of the belief of the existence of God. It's a completely different approach. We cannot and will not try to show you that God does not exist, we will and can show you that your believing in him is retarded and pointless.

You asked a question but then say some specific answers are not welcomed then why ask a question?

Anyway there is nothing wrong with trying to understand the view of religious people. I just tend to keep asking questions to them i don't call their religion stupid or dumb i just say '' well you believe that without any evidence you should reconsider what your blindly following''.

Also some people do believe there is heaven but then i could only hope to wonder if their god and beliefs are proven false what would they do. In my mind as i am a free thinker and i think rationally think they will later in life appreciate the knowledge. Religious people most of the time are closed minded and arrogant it is not the atheist that is wrong for asking questions but it is the believer for not choosing to understand what is actually happening in day to day life.

It is also sad people are college graduates have all kinds of degrees. This proves they are smart and intelligent but still choose to close their minds and stop their research and asking questions once religion steps in.
