Too many factors to cover. You need to learn how to use the Layer Styles, Pen Tool, texturing, etc. You're better off just learning how to use Photoshop in general, instead of just specifically focusing on how to make thread layouts.

You can always buy one, or request a free one.

He wants to make money by selling thread layouts, though.

Oh, I read his sentence as "I wanna start thread layouts for my own shop".
I think I should go to bed, I am starting to get too tired.

In that case, you might want to start getting into Photoshop in general, as Swaze said.

Definitely get a better understanding of PS first. Then get to know blending options, bevel and emboss is pretty popular in layouts, and learning some C4D never hurts either. Best of luck!

One of the best references you could get for designing layouts is through looking at the structures of webdesigns.

Its going to take you around 1-2 years of doing graphic design to be able to produce work that people are going to want to work for. At least 6 months if ur going hardcore but its going to take time ur not going to learn overnight.
