My policy has been violence for as long as I remember now.
I tend to ignore general remarks made about my sexuality, but if people are particularly insulting or get close to me, I just punch them in the face.
Bullying on the grounds of sexual orientation is becoming more and more infrequent here. Within my school, my whole year are accepting of my sexuality. Whilst it's usually younger kids that have remarks to make, there is even a lesbian couple in my school. I do think more people need to take the plunge and live openly, but you can't coerce people into doing so. It's a natural process, but if it reached its peak in schools, things would be better for all homosexual children.
Violence does actually tend to win against bullies. There is stigma about homosexuals being weak and effeminate. Not only are these perceived weaknesses usually the reason for bullying, but they're also misconceptions. Homosexuals are as physically powerful as any other member of their sex. Their strength and willingness to defend themselves ought to be demonstrated. The sooner, the better.
