    Thinking of Renting VPS

    Hey guys,

Recently I have come into possession of 28 servers (don't ask me how) and I am thinking of setting them up as botting servers. I don't personally have this many bots to run so I was going to ask a few questions so that maybe I could set these up to start renting out VPS space...

    1. The servers have two 3.0 GHZ Intel Xeon quad core processors each. They currently each have 2gb of ram but I can easily upgrade them to 6 or 12gb each. On the current specs (dual 3.0ghz Intel Xeon quad cores and 2gb ram) how many bots could it successfully run? (not that I will upgrade all of them once I start renting vps space).

    2. The servers will all be linked into my internet via dual Ethernet cables and will easily pull 100mbps speeds. For security issues (cause we have some hackers here...) would this pose a threat to my whole internet connection? Like would there be any way for a crafty hacker to snake into the rest of the computers and servers on the connection?

    3. On another internet note... Would my ISP be enough to allow others to connect via IP to the servers and control them? Or would it be best if I established a separate business DSL VPS connection with the provider? (that would eliminate the 2nd question for the most part)

    4. Would running a virus scan on each server daily interfere with my customer's botting? I would think it would only slow it down for a few minutes while I run one. I'd do this to ensure my customers' account safety.

Honestly that is all I have to ask. Mostly concerned about the security issues... Please leave your answers here as I would love to start hosting soon.

Theres a few problems with running VPS / Server hosting out of your house.

The first problem is that you need to get another line into your house to atleast dedicate the servers to. That option or possibility varies between companies and where you live, etc. I know this because i tried this with Comcast and where i live. Usually allocating MORE speed for a single house already hooked up with DSL / etc is not what they like to do.

I eventually got comcast to allow me to rent ANOTHER modem(Docsis 3.0) for 50mbps up / 10mbps down. But it took HOURS of talking to multiple representatives and them saying it was not possible because you can only susbcribe once per residence. I eventually got the other modem hooked up and have a 15mbps and a 50mbps.

I would suggest you try to get another modem rented or purchased and then get another line through where you live, or piggyback your current cable line and have them push the new speeds to a specific outlet in your house(Comcast did that for me). Without doing this you'll go through tons of bandwidth and the up / down speeds will be horrible for your general internet use(What you use now), and definitely for the servers you'll be setting up

The second problem i've read is that Comcast / Verizon / etc don't like it when people do this specifically. This being having servers and hosting dedicated servers out of their home.

Look into renting a physical space somewhere cheap, and getting a business class line for the servers specifically. You might be able to talk to a local server distributor / host and see if you can use their physical space and maybe pay for what you're using there.

If you have 28 extra servers just laying around ill buy one for the right price, unless you are intent on renting them out.

I didn't buy them my work upgraded to better servers and these were in the trash room. My friend told me about them and how he saw them. So we each took 28 from the pile (left a few so it not looking weird) and they all work.

Thank you for letting me know about this. I will attempt to find a small enough space to rent each month. If not I may just end up allowing custom botting services... Let the customer choose which bot to run and provide accounts for it while paying for the server usage. And allow them to check the bots with teamviewer...

so does this mean that you won't have to rent any servers from now on?
