    The Universe Is Ever Expanding...

Or Is It? Anyways I DO NOT take credit for this following article, though I can't remember where I got it from...

The UNiverse..You are intuitively correct to note that we often think erroniously of space as being inside of a bigger space - that is, most of us think of Space as being a volume contained within a larger volume. This type of thinking, for instance, leads to the erronious view many people have of the Big Bang as a type of explosion inside of a volume of space. The Big Bang (necessary to this conversation, and not off the subject) is (present tense) an expansion of space and time. All of the solid stuff in it (such as us) is merely a side effect of the expansion process.

As for the edge of the universe, I beleive it is correct to say that you are curently teatering on that ‘edge’ at this very moment, and this (all around you) is what it looks like, unless, of course, you can designate a region of space which is consistantly in the future from where you are in time, ri

    ght now.

We can’t confuse ‘looking backward’ in time, as Nova would say, with our telescopes to see ancient light in the past with the notion that we can point the telescope another direction and see the future. Looking for the edge of the universe (and I assume you me the outer most, rather than the inner most boundery) as the outermost boundery is exactly what you are describing. Since we can’t point our telescope in any direction and see the future (at least, as far as we know) this evidence sudgests that you are indeed on the outermost boundery. Some time tommorow will be the outermost boundery, some time tommorow. But it is important to keep in mind that there is no particular direction we point our telescopes to see the inner boundery (the past) and no particular direction where we can see the outer boundery (the future / the present). In fact, everything you see, even inches from your face is in the past, however infinitesmaly so.

But a physical edge, boundery, like where the beach meets the ocean kind of boundery? There really is no such thing in a physical sense. You truly are at that point, and everything around you, other galaxies, quasars, black holes, your computer screen, the table top, the wall across the room, etc., are all in the past, set back from your theoretical edge where you sit or stand.
, it's true that if you were stationary in space and could look in any direction as far as it was possible, you would perceive an "edge" to the Universe. The reason for this is that as you look at objects which are further and further away, you are looking back in time. If you look at a galaxy one billion light years away, you are looking at it as it was one billion years ago. Therefore, if you could see far enough, eventually you would see the beginning of the Universe (the Big Bang) and you would not be able to see any further. The age of the Universe leads to a horizon which limits your field of view.

However, if you could then travel without restriction, it's entirely possible that you might discover that the Universe is infinite. No matter where you happen to be in this infinite space, you have a personal horizon which places a limit on the Universe that you can see, but it's entirely possible to set off travelling in one direction and never encounter an end to space.

just because you watched a tape in school dosent mean its real.

This is just one thearoy. There are many others out there that have evidence to back them up also.

Neither one of you backs up your claim in anyway, unless you count "We watched a video in school."

I'd like to see some proof or a logical explanation from a reliable source. This means no Wikipedia.

really? I'm in the universe, and I haven't been expanding recently

also I have a question for the people who agree... What is coming out of the expansion? is just it nothingness that is counstantly growing wider in all directions? is there new planets being formed by the "expansion" of the unvierse? if its getting bigger, are there galaxys going outward to this new "expansion"?

You have expanded, your body preduced new cells which made you in a very minimalistic way, bigger. but it is not the cause of the universe, it is the cause of your body's system, so you are in a way right and wrong; look at it however you wish.

and to the thread, how can we know if the universe is expanding, if we have not even got out of our theoratically 'small part of the universe' solar system.
I do not believe that the universe has an edge - you just keep going and going and going and see an endless horizon - because if the universe had an edge , then it means it had a fixed size, so there could actually be something bigger then the universe, which will mean that in theory our universe is inside another universe, which is (agreeing that the universe has an edge) is in another universe , which is in another one - and this goes on until infinity, This in my mind proves that there is no edge to the universe. However I doubt it is expanding, I just believe it is infinite which is in a sense expanding all the time but not really.

    The Universe Is Ever Expanding...

It is very hard for a person to imagine just leaving the earth and just going forever and ever and ever never ending because everything that they know of has a end. I believe that the universe does not end but is not expanding it is merely never ending. I also believe this concept is sometimes too big for our minds to comprehend because like i said everything we know has a end.

    The Universe Is Ever Expanding...

When he says expanding he means moving further away for what you may call the 'big bang'. So plants may not be being formed but we are expanding by moving further away... Simple just try to understand. Although im aying this i don not believe in the big bang. I have never really seen proof. I mean teachers at school say of yes it's been proven, more like they have abit of theoretical evidence adn scientist believe it.

Space itself is expanding... things aren't getting better, but space itself is expanding.

Yes, galaxys are moving away from us, and from each other. Everything in the universe is moving apart at a constant rate. If you want to ask why you aren't exapnding and moving apart from yourself, the answer is gravity.

I can't see how anything could be infinite. There has to be a set physical amount of matter in the universe. Beyond this there should be nothing, nothing at all, just plain vacuum. I'm not saying that it can't be expanding, just that it can't be infinite.

Of course the universe is way too big to prove these claims, so it's just a theory.

    The Universe Is Ever Expanding...

The Universe isn't infinite because that isn't physically possible and doesn't correlate with how the evidence suggest the universe started. If you start from something small and expand, you don't reach infinity, you reach something that is so stinking big it might as well be infinity. As far as the boundary of the universe, we probably won't know of its existence or nature for a very long time, if ever. We may be able to predict its features as we move forward in the Relativity Theory and Quantum Theory, and eventually, the Quantum Theory of Gravity.

The Big Bang Theory has non-theoretical evidence for it, the most moving of which is Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. Before it was discovered, the Big Bang Theory had already predicted its existence. If you don't know what it is, go look it up. I'm lazy and its around midnight here.

I think the universe is a hige globe and you can never reach the end of the universe as u will just repeat, but it will all look different because it would take millions or even billions to go around. I think that unlike our relation to the Earth (Being on it not in it) i think weare inside the sphere of the universe because there is no "floor" or ground

So if gravity is holding things together why is everything in the universe being pulled apart? should it not be that everything is being pulled in by the largest object?

It's not being "pulled" apart, space itself is expanding into the universe. Everywhere. It's not expanding, space is being ADDED to the equation, giving the illusion that things are being pushed apart.

    The Universe Is Ever Expanding...

Gravity is the necessary counter-force to stop the expansion happening in no time at all (literally). Forces and the other forces countering them are what create the illusion of time. If you had no gravity, then the explosion would happen, in no timescale, since it would be working against nothing (Purely theoretical, making any assumptions about changing the smallest law of physics is ridiculous, let alone the massive beast that we know as the battle between forces).

So, yeah, if the universe was proven to be expanding (And it has, look up redshift), then that pretty much proves gravitational theory as well, if you subscribe to my odd notions about forces.

maybe if we saw the lot of space... there could be anything, here is an analogy:
we sit on the planet. the planet is in space. space could be in something larger, we cant conclude anything, really. planets could just be moving up and down. it takes millions of years to orbit things
