The Ultimate Halo 3 MLG guide!

This is my guide on how to practice and learn the ways to become a better Halo 3 MLG player.

In this guide I'm going to go over the following...
-Maps.
-Communication and Callouts.
-Objectives.
-Weapons.
-Tips.
-Training methods.
-Creating a team.

1 - Maps.

In Halo 3, there are several MLG halo maps... The Pit, Narrows, Construct, Guardian, Onslaught, and Amplified. To get better on these maps, simply practice in Custom Games with friends. You can learn spawn points, sneaky jump spots, and weapon placement. Having knowledge of the map prior before gameplay is a good thing to have. This is the most simple thing to learn.

2 - Communication and Callouts.

Communication with your team is a key factor in winning! Communicating allows you to know where the enemy is so you don't get shot / assassinated out of nowhere. (You don't have a radar in MLG after all...) The best way to communicate is to use your Map Callouts.

Learn them here. - http://www.mlgpro.com/forum/showthread.php?t=174127

Callouts are the best thing to communicate with because your hole team should have them memorized and get right on it. For example... You're on The Pit and you've just died in empty hall by two people. "Two people in Empty Hall! Their weak!" Then your team-mates should know exactly what to do.

A good callout should consist of 3 things...
-Location
"Empty Hall" for example.
-Who's there
"Walshy" for example.
and...
-Health.
"One Shot" for example.

When calling out health you state "One shot" If you've sniped / mauled or put 3 shots on him with a Battle Rifle. And when you shout "Weak" you're saying That they are about half health and need more than one shot.

3 - Objectives.

You're most likely going to have an Objective game while playing MLG in Halo 3. There will either be Capture the flag or Oddball.

While playing an objective game you should never just "Grab it and run." You should worry about the enemy first. With them dead it will be much easier to carry the objective. Also, have a team set-up while going to the objective. Just running in and grabbing it does nothing, with a strategy you can have team mates backing you up while you're running the flag or carrying th oddball safetly. This is quite simple, but most people lack in having a strategy.

A good strategy in a Capture the Flag game is "flag tossing". It allows you to run much faster than normaly just carrying the flag. The only downside is people know where you are more often than if you're just carrying the flag.

4 - Weapons.

In MLG there are less weapons then a normal team slayer game. The weapons consist of a Battle Rifle, Sniper, Rocket Launcher, Mauler, Carbine, Plasma Pistol and grenades.

Battle Rifle - When using the battle rifle, try and aim towards the head. It decreases their health the fastest and you can kill the person in 4 shots. Although, you can should the body 3 times and shoot the head the fourth shot to kill him. You get the point...

Sniper - Aim for the head to get a headshot or just kill them with two body shots.

Rocket Launcher - The best power weapon in MLG, this can be used to take out large groups alone.

Mauler and Plasma Pistol - These are the close combat weapons to drop a players shields fast, One shot / charge and a beat down will kill them very fast.

Carbine - If you can shoot very fast with this it's a very good weapon, it sometimes is better than a battle rifle, especially at close combat.

Grenades - Use these wisely, you don't have a radar and someone could be right around the corner. So throw them when you think.

5 - Tips.

Here are some tips that I think help a lot during game play. One, switch your button layout to Bumper Jumper. It allows you to jump and shoot at the same time while moving you look screen. Two, use a high sensitivity, it allows you to see more of whats going on and you can do flag tossing much easier. Three, learn to strafe! When battling someone with a Battle Rifle and you straif you will most likely win. Strafe: moving side to side while shooting and crouching / jumping at the same time. These are just a few and I may add more later.

6 - Training Methods.

There are several ways of training to get better, you can always play by yourself in a normal slayer game and try different ways of slaying, etc. Then if you go to MLGpro.com and ask to do custom games with other good players that will also help you improve. Playing with people better than you allows you to learn new things, places to hide, etc. These ways should help you get better skills greatly.

7 - Creating a team.

When creating a team have it with people you live near, it's basically impossible just playing with random people and going to a MLG event. Have players join that are good at certain things, like a steady Battle Rifle, good sniping skills, sneaky, etc. Think of a good team name, having a good name is better than no name at all. And lastly, practice as a team! Get a strategy down and see how each other play.

I may add more to this later, or if someone requests something. But this is a very good start.

lol you dont know anything about Halo. this guide is also very plain, simple, and basic.

first off, in CTF, attacking is much better than defending.

You should worry about the enemy first.

WTF are you talking about? when the game starts, you go immediately and get their flag. that way, if they kill you while you're attempting to grab their flag, you will just respawn back at your base, and they won't be able to get your flag because you'll just respawn back at your base.

secondly, its fucking obvious that headshots do more damage than bodyshots. it doesnt take a retard to know that.

all you basically did was list the weapons, the maps, and the game objectives. You call that a guide? if you actually want to make a real guide, then post strategy, tactics, best spots to hide, what to do/what not do when the game starts, respawn points, etc.

you fail at Halo, seriously. this guide sucks as well.

You my friend, are stupid. One, attacking and killing the enemy are the same thing, if you'd like me to rephrase that sentence in the guide I'll gladly do so. Secondly you don't want to immediately rush the flag, that's just a free kill for the opposing team. You should get set up, spawn kill, grab flag, etc. Thirdly, no, everyone does not now the headshot / body damage ratio, it's a basic guide to practice off of. And, last but not least, this is not the greatest guide in the world, I know that. It's covering the basics and over time I will go into further detail. Also, I do not fail at Halo I'm quite good and I do not think my guide fails sir, you fail.

This is a pretty good guide.(I've pretty much quit halo 3)
I was big into MLG when i used to play, i had 50 in double team and 50 in team slayer. But over time in match making and getting better you meet better people and hang out in ffa games with them and other higher lvl's is a great way to get better.

True, I may add that to the guide. Thanks for the comment.

Edit: Added the section.

Very basic guide. I was expecting to learn how to become an advanced MLG player. Beginners won't learn much from this.

nice guide 7/10 but it wasn't as advanced as i thought it was, for example u could of used more tips from mlgpro.com, i know they have some good ones there. Also u forgot to put a description for the plasma pistol

Edit: nvm didnt read it said mauler and plasma pistol :P

nice thread but i'm sure you could youtube mlg and get the samething or go to the xbox forums for tons of guides
