    What is Magic?

Okay so we all know about the skill of magic to start with correct? Wait.. You don't? Well then I guess that would be a great place to start! Magic in its most basic form is "spells". The magic level of a player ranges between 1-99, as do all runescape skills, and also in unison with other skills, things are unlocked along the way (in this case spells). The symbol for mage/magic is >> [IMG] << , just so we are clear on that.

    The basics of Magic!

Okay so now that we have all of that out of the way, we may as well start on the actual basics of magic. For starters you need to know the different types of magic that there are. The 3 main types of magic are:
    *Offensive.
    *Stat-lowering.
    *Non-Offensive.

    Offensive

Offensive magic is one of the key things to having a magic pure, as without it your pure will not be able to do any damage to any opponent! (although there are pures like this, but we will go on to that a little later on in the guide). Offensive magic is magic that allows you to cause damage to another player, and any spell that does this, is counted as an offensive spell (e.g. from air strike all the way to ice barrage).

    [IMG] [IMG]

    Stat-lowering

These kind of spells are not very commonly used when it comes to combat, although in my opinion they are highly under-estimated. Stat-lowering spells allow players to lower the defence/attack/strength of another player. When you are in 1v1 combat with people these kind of spells are very helpful as they lower the chances of the opponent from taking hitpoints, while increasing your chances of taking theirs. This then puts you at a distinct advantage.

    Non-offensive

These are the final type of spell that can be used when using magic, these are most likely the most common spells being used on the game up to this day.. TELEPORTING! These kind of spells help a player get from location to location on the game, without having to lift their finger more than once! There is also another type of Non-offensive magic, which are spells such as 'high alchemy' and 'low alchemy', 'superheat item', 'vengeance other', 'heal other', etc. (you get the picture)!

    [IMG] [IMG]

The key to staying a Pure...

When using magic, the one thing that you have to look out for, is the fact that you are using a defence style of magic attacking. When this is activated, each spell that you cast will give half of its usual magic exp (experience), which then also giving the other half of the exp that should have been earned into defence. As this is a guide for magic PURES then using this attack style would then ruin the prestigous "1-10-20-30-40 45" defence that you have! I have seen this mistake made by a number of pures which has then spoiled there hard earned pure. Don't make this mistake.. I REPEAT DO NOT MAKE THIS MISTAKE! Its always better to give one quick check that your on the correct attack style before attacking something. After all you know what they say.. Better safe than sorry!

    [IMG] <<<<<< NOT GOOD!

    Magic quests

In this section of the guide I am going to list all of the quests that give magic exp. Within this section I will also include how hard the quest is, and if the quest gives any defence exp (for you pures out there)! And if so, how much defence exp they actually give.. (Don't think i forgot you zerkers).

Here is a list of the current quests that give magic exp on runescape:

NOTE: (I have also colour coded the quests!)
    Green = No Defence Exp.
    Red = Gives Defence Exp.
-- Desert Treasure (Difficult)... 20,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Dream Mentor (Difficult)... 10,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Enakhra's Lament (Medium)... 7,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- The Eyes of Glouphire (Medium)... 12,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- A Fairy Tale Part I - Growing Pains (Difficult)... 1,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- The Giant Dwarf (Medium)... 1,500 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- The Grand Tree (Medium)... 2,150 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Horror from the Deep (Medium)... 4,662.5 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Imp Catcher (Easy)... 875 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
    -- King's Ransom (Medium)... 5,000 Magic Exp.
-- Legacy of Seergaze (Hard)... 3,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Lunar Diplomacy (Hard)... 5,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- The Path of Glouphire (Medium)...5,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Recipe for disaster (Hard)... 2,500 Magic Exp.
-- Spirits of the Elid (Easy)... 1,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Swan Song (Medium)... 15,000 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Watchtower Quest (Medium)... 15,250 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.
-- Witch's Potion (Easy)... 325 Magic Exp... No Defence Exp.

    Different Magic Spellbooks?!

Now if you still don't have enough information to confuse you at this point, this last bit should just tip the brim of your knowledge so that it reaches the level of "overflowing" ;D! Being as basic as I can be.. There are 3 different types of spellbooks.. Each of which has their own major upsides and downsides. I will start off by naming each of the different magic spell books, and then will go into more detail about the actual characteristics and requirements for each of the spellbooks themselves! The 3 different types of magic spellbooks are:

    *** Normal Magicks ***
    *** Ancient Magicks ***
    *** Lunar Magicks ***

    Normal Magicks!

This is the type of magic spellbook that everyone.. and I mean EVERYONE on the game knows about. This is because the minute you log on to your character for the first time, the default magic spellbook that is set is this spellbook. Each spellbook contains the home teleport spell, and each spellbook's home teleport spell takes you to somewhere different! In this case the home teleport spell takes you to Lumbridge. The home teleport spell requires no runes to cast, but has a 30 minute waiting period in between each cast. This spell book has a mixture of all 3 spell types (refer to 'Basics of Magic' earlier). There are no requirements to use this spellbook, but like all other spellbooks, there are certain requirement levels and sometimes quests to use each spell.

    Ancient Magicks

This is the type of magic spellbook that is mainly used by higher level, more experienced pures. This spellbook has an amazing set of offensive spells, while containing a few non-offensive spells (only teleports), and absolutely no stat-lowering spells whatsoever. This spellbooks home teleport spell also requires no runes and has a 30 minute waiting period between each cast, but in this case it teleports the player to edgeville. This magic spellbook has the requirement of completing the desert treasure quest to use (refer to the 'magic quests' section), and also a minimum level of 50 magic to cast the first spell (excluding home teleport). The highest spell on the ancient Magicks spellbook is Ice Barrage (not including the use of special items). The spellbook looks like this:

    Lunar Magicks

This is the type of spellbook which is mainly used by Zerker pures, this is because it contains the spell 'vengeance' which acts like a very large recoil on the opposing player when casted. This spell book like the previous two has a home teleport spell which does not require any runes or a level to cast, this home teleport spell teleports the player to the lunar island itself, which greatly helps when switching between magic spellbooks. This spellbook has the requirement of the Lunar Diplomacy Quest (which requires 40 defence), and therefore cannot be done by pures with 1 defence, so if you are a one defence pure, sorry for wasting your time.

    Magic's Help in Gaining Charms!

Recently a lot of pures have been wanting to gain levels in summoning, as it helps in overall game-play, which in my opinion... is a VERY smart thing to do, I <3 Summoning. As we all know, summoning may cost a lot, be a bother to get up, etc etc. But the worst part about levelling summoning is gaining the charms! Magic itself helps in a lot of ways when gaining charms, for example, the two quickest ways which people use to gain charms are "Bursting" rock lobsters or nechryeals in multi-combat zones. This allows them to kill several enemies at once, and therefore gain a lot of charms as they kill a lot of monsters at once. Also people use things such as salamanders, just normal spells etc to collect charms using prayer, or even safespots. This is done at many places such as "Giant rock crabs" (being the key place). There have been a number of pures that have simply got 99 magic and 99 summoning, with nothing else, for the simple reason that magic and charms go together like cake and cream (Mmmmm...).

    [IMG] ------>> [IMG]

    The Mage's Guild

The mage's guild for starters looks like this: [IMG] Just so you know what you are heading to before you set off, the easiest route to get there is by either teleporting to castle wars using a ring of duelling and running, or using the watchtower teleport (Level 68 mage and Watchtower quest done) and running from there. Heres a map of the two routes :
Inside the mage's guild there are a lot of things that help a player to gain levels in their magic stat, or even purchase resources to help themselves do so. For example upstairs on the first floor of the mage's guild, there is a rune shop, which allows a player to purchase runes for themselves, which can then be used to gain their magic levels. The same person that sells the runes to players, also sells the cape of magic to the people that have managed to reach the maximum level in magic (99). [IMG]
Also there is a place below the magic guild which has a cage that cannot be entered, with a fair number of zombies within it, this allows the player to cast on the zombies without them hitting back, which can help a lot when training magic! There is also a teleport to the rune essence mine within the mage's guild, but seen as though that does not fully connect to the magic itself, we will go into that in further detail in another guide maybe...

    Different Types of Magic Runes

For this section of the guide there is not much that I can do apart from show you a brief picture of each of the runes, and explain the key use for each of them.

    Magic runes:

[IMG] - The air rune is one of the main 4 elemental runes, and is used in a substancial amount of spells, it can be used for all 3 of the spell types.

[IMG] - The Earth rune is another one of the 4 main elemental runes, and is once again used in a mass amount of spells, it can also be used in all 3 of the spell types.

[IMG] - The Water rune is another one of the 4 main elemental runes, and is once again used in a mass amount of spells, it can also be used in all 3 of the spell types.

[IMG] - The Fire rune is the final one of the 4 main elemental runes, and is once again used in a mass amount of spells, it can also be used in all 3 of the spell types.

[IMG] - The body rune has a key part that it plays, and it is usually in the stat-lowering spell type spells.

[IMG] - The mind rune is the rune that is used in the lower level offensive spells, e.g. air strike, water strike etc, which has a low hit strength, and has the highest chance of splashing out of all of the offensive spells.

[IMG] - The Cosmic rune is the rune that plays the key part to enchanting jewellery and bolts, this rune is very important itself to the runescape economoy, as without it.. the money flow would not run as smoothly with players not being able to enchant.

[IMG] - The chaos rune is the rune that is used in the medium level offensive spells, e.g. wind bolt, earth bolt etc, which has a medium hit strength, and has a middle level of splashing.

[IMG] - The astral rune is the most commonly used rune within the whole of the lunar spellbook, and is used for a lot of non-offensive spells, without this rune, the more lazy runescape players would struggle, as it helps then do a lot of daily errands with no movement.

[IMG] - The law rune is most likely the most important rune in the game.. It teleports people... A LOT! Not much more to say about it, just TELEPORT, TELEPORT, TELEPORT.

[IMG] - The Death rune is used for the medium to high level offensive spells, it is used in all 3 of the spellbooks, and has a high hit strength, while having a low chance of splashing.

[IMG] - Finally the blood rune, the scary one, the BIG PAPPA RUNE o_O! Out of all runes, this one is the most powerful, seeing as it is used for the highest level offensive spells on the game, which have an extremely high hitting strength, while pretty much never splashing! These runes are so amazing! Buy as many as you can as fast as you can! Do it NOW!

    Main Training methods used

Throughout the whole of runescape, people are levelling their magic day by day.. But the big question is.. what are the main ways that people choose to train it? Here is the part of the guide where that is shown.

    Alchemy

The vast majority of runescape players that are training magic use the 'high alchemy' spell, and pretty much alch whatever they can get their hands on! Although alchemy can bring in quite a large loss, there are a certain number of items that can be bought for a certain price in the GE (Grand Exchange) which allow the person to lose no money at all! One very good website which allows people to look at these prices is www.alch-prices.com. An alching picture : [IMG]

    Bursting

This method is known to be the quickest exp that can be gained per hour, people have maximised at 190k exp in one hour, by simple gathering enemies together and bursting them in multi combat, so they hit more than one enemy at once, this is a key way of quick charms too as we talked about earlier in the guide. Here is a picture of what a burst spell looks like when being done in multi-combat: [IMG]

    Stun-Alching

Very recently people have started to use this method, which we see that by having an enemy trapped (behind a wall, or in a cage), then we can stun them, which is a very good rate of exp on its own, but then people have recently discovered that it is possible to alch in between the casts of stun, which is then becoming the exp of an alch + a stun in the time it takes to do one. This maximises exp, but on a bigger note, ALSO MAXIMISES LOSSES. (Sorry no picture for this one guys, impossible for a picture of stun-alching).

    Non-Offensive Magic Pures

Some people that have really found themselves to love the joy of magic (Nim), and feel that they do not need to level their hitpoints stat above 10 (like Nim), or use any form of offensive magic (Good pal Nim), manage to achieve themselves the maximum level on the game in magic, at an astounding 50 combat! (GO NIM!).
I may not have mentioned this already but a close friend of mine named 'Nim' on runescape is currently working on a 10 hp 99 magic account, while skilling ofcourse. Just consider this free publicity for Nim <3
On a more serious note, here is a picture of a non-offensive magic pure:

Nice guide. Good information, all though it's a bit sloppy.

@Stan^2, I ran several searches and nothing came up other than this. Might be ripped though.

Good guide. But your copyright says it's 1996. Is that a legitimate copyright? They cost $50 and take a while to get.
