life = the period of existance. Please exist without asking the question of why or how you exist. To question your own existance is to question existance in general. You make yourself like the toddler that always asks why. When they ask why to a certain point to where you cannot answer.

I swear, that is the stupidest thing I have heard.

How can the meaning of life, be to find the meaning of life if the meaning of life is to find it? (tongue twister)

It's like saying the way to jump a hundred feet is to be able to jump 100 feet.

    The Meaning of Life

I believe the meaning of life is to gain new knowledge, and share it with others so that we will all be intelectually more capable of whatever is thrown at our species.

I know it's kind of a hard thing to understand but what I'm saying is everyone's meaning in life will be different and the meaning of life is to find YOURS. Get it?

    The Meaning of Life

To me, the meaning of life is to see that the human race continues to live once I have passed, if not, my life was a failure.

I don't mean I will literally see them when I die, I meant that I once I am dead, if the human race is still there, I've done my part.

    The Meaning of Life

I'm going to give this philosophy stuff a shot. Don't be too hard on me.

Your speculation stands on it's feet very well. Although it seems you've thought a lot on the 'implied' and haven't (correct me if I'm wrong) put the same amount of thought into the indirectly implicated things.

Number two sets up the equation pretty well. But assumes by your earlier speculations on "meaning" that existence is the cause and everything else is the effect and that this is the only way it could possibly be. Keep reading.

I notice you used the word "need" as opposed to "has." Implying that there could be margin for an explanation of the cause. Regardless of whether or not the explanation is needed, there's no evidence from your explanation that implies that there couldn't be an explanation that broadens the equation.

I'm not going to try and come up with an explanation right now, because it's irrelevant to what I'm getting at. Assuming there could be an explanation, the existence of an explanation at all implies that "existence" itself is actually an effect, and that the potential "explanation" we referenced above is the cause. Any such explanation would elaborate or at least provide insight as to why this "existence" exists, the same way that the cause would provide insight on any effect in any 'cause & effect' situation. In other words the effect (our existence) would have some depth of sentimental meaning IN RELATION to the cause.

Notice I said "in relation to." This means people have a choice as to define what the higher cause is to them. Notice I said "to them." Which means each person defines their own purpose in life. Which brings us to an ideological conclusion that I will attempt to wrap up in a neat, philosophical package. The EFFECT cannot effect the CAUSE. Which means it doesn't matter what we define our "cause" as, because it can't actually define what the higher cause is. Even if multiple people decide to define their cause in the same manner, it's impossible to determine what the real "cause" that we referred to earlier actually is.

Whether the higher cause is a chemical reaction, an intelligent designer, or a foolish anomaly that some nutcase (me) on a forum came up with; I was just approaching the question a little differently.

I would love to hear your response, Sythe. Criticism, etc. Since it was your ideology I was speaking from.

    The Meaning of Life

The problem with this is that: If there is a cause, to which existence is the effect, then that cause must come from something which exists (god, the great magical void, or whatever). Which puts you back where you started, with existence as the root cause of all causal chains.

Even if an 'intelligent' or 'sentimental' meaning of the causal relation existed, it would only be as a direct result of the existence of the entity which is responsible for creating the causal relation. Thus it is still a causal chain in which existence is the root node -- the first cause.

    For example:
If I get my mother a birthday present. The causal relation between my action of buying a present and the effect: that a present is presented to my mother, is still a direct result of my even existing to begin with. If I did not exist then the causal relation could not occur. And if the universe did not exist then I could not exist.

So at the root node of the causal tree there must be raw unjustified unintelligent unsentimental existence. That is: something must exist before anything can happen.

Well people aren't looking for the direct meaning of their lives, otherwise they would just ask their parents. To which the answer would be "we were horny and drunk."

They are looking for 'higher purpose', which I am reasoning is existence itself.

But I like your point about the effect being unable to alter the cause. People should keep this in mind, and make their own paths through life irrespective of what they think their higher purpose or meaning should be.

Life is what we make of it, hence we give our own individual meaning to life.

Quite a goal isn't it? Why shouldn't this be the meaning of life, then?

    Fallacy: Appeal to Ignorance
The question is never 'why shouldn't', but 'why should'. The burden of proof lies with the claimant.
