The Oscars Tweet (Ellen DeGenres & Samsung)

Ellen's record breaking selfie (over 3 million retweets) was in fact just a marketing advert from Samsung. The selfie which features Jennifer Lawrence, Channing Tatum, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o and her brother Junior, Angelina Jolie, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres and Jared Leto was in fact a clever ploy from Samsung, who donated 1$ to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and the Humane Society for every retweet then gifted every member of Ellen's chat show (The Ellen Show) a Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - the phone that the selfie was taken by.

Personally, I'm kind of disappointed that this was a marketing stunt, because the amount of retweets was kind of impressive before I knew that. Props though, good job Samsung.

What do you think of this kind of advertising? Is "smart marketing" the way to go these days? We're seeing more and more adverts like Coke Zero's Mission Impossible, TMobile's Welcome Home and the Telekinetic Coffee Shop - where do you think it'll go in future?

 

That's $3m+ that was donated to good organizations, so I absolutely think it's a good way to advertise. Any method in which you can successfully advertise your product while raising money for good causes is a good method.

Why is this disappointing? What's better - 3 million retweets or 3 million retweets + $3m donated?

 

only thing samsung showed was that their cameras suck, deff wont be buying any of their tablets/phones etc.

Yeah, as stated by Sanctuary, I have absolutely no problem with this. It's clever and managed to raise some cash.

 

Very smart, got two of my favourite actors in that picture, Gutted Leonardo hasn't won his oscar, yet. Although Matthew deserved it!

That would be disappointing. Otherwise, I have no problem with it. Pretty smart of Samsung.

 

I don't see what's wrong with this.......... Celebrities are used ALL. THE. TIME. to market products. Just because samsung is more clever and actually incorporates twitters doesn't mean they've pulled some disappointing, deviant trick on the world. A marketing trick, sure, but no less despicable than the advertisements you see on your facebook page.

Not to mention the charity money they gave from this advertisement. That's pretty generous, even IF 3 million dollars is pocket change to them.

 

Wow, that's pretty clever. When I saw this picture originally, I just thought it was a regular picture, I had no idea it was staged. Tbh, I don't really understand why it was retweeted so many times, but hey, if $1 is getting donated for each retweet, then yay!

Because people saw money was going to charity and retweeted it.


Im not disappointed that money went to charity at all, I just mean breaking the retweet record isn't impressive when that method is used. I think its clever and great that they donated 3m$.

Just curious to hear what people think social media and real life events will wind up like in the future.

 

The selfie to promote samsung thing I like, but I have always disliked companys trying to get recognised by donating to a charity.
Donating should be anonymous, and not through some fuckfest of advertising.
