And I've wanting to learn how to make these types of images (with transparent backgrounds).

I know this is probably some super easy task, but like I said I'm a complete novice at graphics work.

The only graphics related program I have is GIMP.

    Any help is much appreciated!

I'm not to familiar with GIMP,, but i believe it's very similar to photoshop,, and the way to do it is to cut out parts of a picture which you want to be transparent,, you will now it worked if the background looks like this

And then you'll need to save it as .PNG,, otherwise it won't work.. .JPG doesn't support transparency

I'm guessing you know how to make cutouts on GIMP (cutting out an particular image),, If you don't, i suggest you search some tutorials and get started :)

Hope this will help you,, otherwise don't be afraid to ask more,, I'd be happy to help you :D
