Should my computer be fucked up now?

Well, I was playing WoW, and I accidentially hit the standby key on my keyboard (It's close to esc). After my computer went into standby mode, I proceeded to wiggle the mouse to get it out of standby, so I could play WoW again. It took about 30 seconds for it to go back to normal. But when it went back to normal, it wasn't 'normal'. The whole computer was lagging amazingly. I was lucky if I could take one step forward. After about two minutes, I managed to close to WoW, leaving me to my desktop. Even the mouse lagged as I moved it, and nothing was clickable. I had to use the start bar and arrow keys to restart my computer. After my computer was all booted up and ready to go, I looked on my sidebar, where my cpu and ram usage monitor is located (Vista, urghh.). Previously, I used 2% cpu maximum when my computer was idle. Now it's 34%. When I browse the web, it bounces from 60-99%. I've restarted my computer twice, it didn't do anything. Halp Maii.

Reformat.

The cause is probably a virus, if it's that slow you won't be able to scan though so ya you should reformat.

How would him pressing standby cause a virus -.-

I'm not saying that did, but sometimes viruses that were already on the computer show up later. It most likely is a messed up hard drive but I'm not sure if that would increase CPU usage.

Its really suspicious that cpu usage would jump that high while online. Backup Any important data, and reinstall windows.

You guys are not pointing on one crucial issue.

But first, I must point out to Midnight Potion that more RAM will not effect the CPU, and buying a new computer is completely pointless.

The crucial issue which may be the cause of your lag is file fragmentation due to inexpected closure of a program, or anything of the like. So my advice is do the following: Run the disk defragmentor. If that doesn't help, scan for adware, malware and virii just to make sure they aren't the problem. Lastly, download a PC optimizer with Vista compatibility, which can help increase performance. I run Vista, it runs faster than XP on my computer in fact, which I like. I don't run the sidebar though, I stopped it from executing on startup to save RAM.

My computer usually uses alot of CPU but while im on just MSN and Safari ex. it only uses from 5-20 usually but jumps from 0 to 5 to 3 then to like 25. i dont know what could be the problem i suggest to run disc defragmenter and if that doesnt work then check the c drive for problems when the computer starts up by going to My Computer>right click on (C:)>click properties>tools>checknow. then it will check on startup and fix any problems.

Not sure if srs or just newfag...
I had the same problem.
Just reformat and you should be ok.

'Reformat' is the ugly vomit that's often spewed up out of the mouth of incompitents.
Even after I posted, that took the words right out of my mouth ;)

I'd like to offer a little more advice though.

Here goes,

Computers at this point in time are extemely easy compared to even the mid to late 90s. Graphics have changed, software producers know what consumers go for, and there is a tool for almost everything you need to do. Back when my dad first started using computers, he programmed FORTRAN Punch-cards, which were extremely difficult to program, and this was how you used computers.

If you don't learn the hard road of trial and error, and resort to the longest shortcut of quick-fixing called reformatting, you won't get very far at all. Trial and error was the only main factor which caused computers to evolve out of the command-line DOS and UNIX days.

In short: Learn to fix your problems, so the solution may be shared and used for later problems. Reformatting is generally - as I put it - the longest quick fix you will ever use.

Defragment, type msconfig in "Run" and disable startup items u dont need..if that doesnt work, back up your computer a few days.
