Should elevators and escalators be illegal?

But why should government hold the responsibility to baby millions of people? We are all adults correct? So shouldn't we hold the responsibility to treat our own bodies however we wish? A body is an individual's property correct? So isn't a government that says what you are allowed or not allowed to do with your property imply that the government has some ownership of your property?

yeah but some people aren't trustbale with their own bodies... Like if all weapons/bombs/etc were legal, people would blow themselves up. Same with drugs, only once they get meth'd up enough only then will they do something retarded to another person.

A simpler comparison would be to make cars illegal.

The lives lost and the injuries is worth it for the convenience and accessibility to disabled, among other benefits.

It been proven time and time again that seatbelts can save lives and reduce injury. There disadvantage is that they cause minor discomfort. You may argue other disadvantages but none of them are significant compared to the reduce in chances of death and injury.

Thinking with a logical standpoint it makes sense in almost all situations so wear a seatbelt.

People that do not wear a seatbelt may be ignorant to the risks, or have little value of there life and well being.

People who are ignorant shouldn't face permanent injuries. How would you feel if as a child you were riding you're bike without a helmet -- unaware of the risk-- fell on you're head giving yourself a permanent mental disability.

From the same standpoint people who don't value there life or well being shouldn't suffer permanent disabilities. Often lows like this may be a phase, and there's always a chance it will change.

Police giving tickets to those who don't wear seatbelts gives people another reason to wear them. Having a person get a permanent disability for those reasons isn't fair. Sure life isn't fair, but if you can make it more fair you should.

Exactly, they're made for fast and easy transportation. If you don't want to take the risk, take the stairs. This is a pretty stupid question, as the awnser is obvious, no they should be kept legal.

Edit: I can guarentee that most of those injuries/casualties were caused by someone being stupid, just like with cars.

Actually, the complete opposite would happen. To say "everyone would blow themselves up" is a foolish assumption. No one blows things up without a reason. If everyone had guns, people would be weary to use them because they would be shot back at. A Georgia town required every household to have a gun, and saw a 74% drop in crime after one year, and another 45% drop the next year.

The New American magazine reminds us that March 25th marked the 16th anniversary of Kennesaw, Georgia's ordinance requiring heads of households (with certain exceptions) to keep at least one firearm in their homes.

The city's population grew from around 5,000 in 1980 to 13,000 by 1996 (latest available estimate). Yet there have been only three murders: two with knives (1984 and 1987) and one with a firearm (1997). After the law went into effect in 1982, crime against persons plummeted 74 percent compared to 1981, and fell another 45 percent in 1983 compared to 1982.

And about the meth, you realize that right now meth is highly illegal, yet there are still tons of meth heads running around and killing people? I mean, what else are you going to do? The drug laws and war on drugs are a complete failure yet people still support them. The only way drug laws would be effective is if the government could watch your every move, but that would be an invasion of privacy. But because we have a right to privacy, the government can't do shit to enforce these drug laws.

The reason people do meth is because they don't know what the fuck the drug actually does to them. And that is because the all mighty government doesn't do shit to educate people on hard core drugs. The government thinks that if it says "don't do this" that people will obey, but people aren't fucking robots. Most people get into meth when all their friends start doing it and they think it's ok to do it. I'm pretty sure if all meth users saw pictures like this before they started doing meth:
facesofmeth2005theresa.jpg

then they wouldn't be doing meth today.

The best way to stop people from doing fucked up drugs is to show them how much they actually fuck you up.

Odd, I wasn't aware that you considered education something that should be part of a government at all.

Well I don't, but lets face facts: the government today has the power to ban substances and educate people. So if they ban something, wouldn't telling people why they banned it be even more effective than just banning it? If they actually included hard core drugs in school curriculum, wouldn't the kids be less likely to try these drugs since they know how much they fuck you up? But truth is, the government doesn't give a fuck about your education, which is why they don't do this.

I've been educated on drugs since I was in elementary school.

This analogy is also clearly invalid. Escalators serve a purpose. You don't get addicted to escalators. I'm for total legalization of drugs, but you could have chosen a better metaphor.

I'm pretty sure they don't teach you in 5th grade how cocaine inhibits the dopamine transporter sites in your brain which raises dopamine levels and how you experience negative feelings when the dopamine levels drop down to normal which makes you crave more cocaine.

I don't consider "don't do drugs because they are bad and ruin your life" an education on drugs, it is more of a way to try to scare kids into not doing drugs. But then when the kid sees his other friends doing drugs and they are completely fine, they will think that it is ok to do them.

And this metaphor was for seat belt laws.

They showed pictures of the effects of drugs. That's a ridiculous argument; do you think a fifth grader would understand or care about the chemistry involved?

I remember filling out a packet on drugs and having an officer of the law show us the effects of drug abuse in fifth grade. http://www.dare.com/home/default.asp

Neglecting to use your seatbelt endangers the lives of others in the car.

I don't know what school you went to, but I know for a fact not every school does that. And only showing the effects of drug abuse is extremely biased, that only shows what happens when people use the drug irresponsibly. And I never suggested fifth graders learn the chemical properties of a drug, I asked if you did since you learned about drugs in elementary school. These biased opinions of police officers are worthless, and kids will soon come to realize that when they see their friends are using and nothing bad is happening to them. If people are going to be taught about drugs then they need to be taught what actually happens in the body and how addiction happens and how the brain is altered.

So if you feel endangered then wouldn't you yourself tell your passengers to buckle in? You probably wouldn't even care, because the risk of getting in a car crash is so small, there is no immediate danger. Also add in the small possibility that another passenger happens to fly into you in a car crash, and this "danger" you speak of sounds completely ridiculous.

Most schools in my district have this program. So you're saying that you should present a pro/con list for drug use? What are the pros? Of course they show the radical negative effects of drugs, how else could they reach fifth graders?

It's a possibility and a danger nonetheless. Preventing it with one second of preparation is only logical.

He's speaking figuratively.

I think he wants to prove that people should talk about drugs as they are. When they say OMG WEED IZ BAD IT MAEKS U DIE!!1 And once the person smokes it out of social occasions, they will realize "wow those teachers/government/popos are full of shit, I will now experiment with all other drugs" but if those teachers/government/popos explained to you that marijuana contains THC which is a much more powerful and less dangerous and neurotoxic substance than a drug like meth would make you realize why meth is bad, so before you try it you will know exactly how it affects your body.
Instead of propaganda, education should be truthful facts, which will help a lot in people making decisions once they are well-informed. Then again, everyone will then smoke pot because it's harmless. Which forces the government to install its propaganda plan as only lies will turn people off from it. And thus one unreasonable illegalization turns out to make all this trouble, and truth gets buied deeper and deeper under regulation.
And from this kids will prefer to listen to their peers, some of which wil have good advice and others will have bad advice that will lead them to do hard drugs that aren't worth doing just because their education system did not teach them properly about drug abuse.

No, I mean they should teach kids without bias. Instead of saying "omg drugz r bad" just show what the drug actually does to you. If what the drug actually does to you is bad and kids see it, then you don't need to tell them it's bad because they will be able to see it themselves. And I think 5th grade is a little too early to be teaching kids about drugs lol...
