Sexy, reliable car under $20k?

Early 2010s Elantras or Genesis are cheap and super reliable. Don't get a BMW, those things will cost you so much in repairs.

 

you live in NA or europe? half the people saying BMW prob live in europe where they're a lot cheaper and more common, and thus getting parts is easier and you dont have to take them to a euro mech.

id vote volvo S60 t5 (or t6). had one for a rental car of all things, and that was one damn fine car. pretty speedy with the turbo for being a rental as well.

 

That makes sense. I live in NA. Most people here do advise against BMW. Likely for the reasons you've stated.

Not finding any cars nearby, wish I lived in a bigger city. Still looking for the right one. Everyone selling wants $4k over their car value and I'm trying to find that deal where they sell $1k under.

 

I feel you. just keep looking everyday. deals pop up all the time. hell, i searched for two and a half years damn near everyday till i bought the exact truck i wanted to a killer price.

 

Oh damn nice...not sure I want to wait years...but I'm starting to think by the time I find the deal I want, the Tesla will be out and I could see if I could buy one off somebody.

If you're buying german make sure it's under warranty unless you're willing to pay for maintenance. Got two Audis and they can be pricey if not under warranty.

 

Get a Subaru my man! if you want power fork out a bit extra for a STi. They are so reliable, look good and will ruin any other Japanese car :') (waiting for evo/v-tec hate). Seriously though, the medical practice i work at, there is this one dude who is absolutely balling in $$, he has a mclaren, Tesla typeS, and a trusty 1999 Gc8 Sti Subaru

Honestly, I'd still go with the civic. It's just so reliable. What don't you like about the look?

Every trashy dude with a bit of money gets a benz. Don't get a benz. Also repair costs are astronomical on those things, don't know anything about their reliability

I'd look at a newer model VW or a diesel BMW as other users suggested.

If you're living in NA and you want something that's going to be reliable and have a reasonable resale value several years down the line, I wouldn't go american or german.

I'd like to add that if you get something like a Mercedes/BMW/Audi as a young male in america (I'm assuming you're 25 or younger) your car insurance payment will probably double at the very least, I know that a lot of people here are advising you to get one of these cars, and while I will agree that they are beautiful and fun to drive, the truth is that they are quite expensive to own.

Personally, I was considering buying a new car recently. I was looking at 2016 and 2017 BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, and Porsches, but I decided against them. I'm sure any of them would have been a blast to drive, own, and take care of, but I honestly couldn't justify sinking that much cash into a car at this point in life. I eventually bought a 2016 Honda Accord EX-L and I don't regret it one bit. At first I was a little apprehensive, but the car has grown on me. It's very nice, and I'm sure when the time comes for me to find something new, it'll still fetch me a good price.

In my opinion, cars are like a spectrum. There are three categories: Performance (fun to drive), Cost (to buy), and Reliability (cost to maintain, lower reliability = increasingly costly).
German: Best Performance, Highest Cost, Low Reliability
American: Average Performance, Average Cost, Average Reliability
Japanese: Average Performance, Average Cost, High Reliability

I'd recommend getting something like a Honda Civic/Accord that's around 2-8 years old with a low mileage and no maintenance issues, even better if you can find one under warranty. You may have to look around for a while and compare some deals, but it's a good idea to, especially because this is still a pretty big purchase. With one of these, you don't have to worry much about resale given you take good care of it and don't get in any accidents. This is the type of car parents love to buy their kids who are just learning to drive, I assure you that you won't struggle to find a buyer.

At the end of the day, drive what you want to drive, just be aware of the costs you are going to incur by doing so. I will admit that I might be a little biased towards Honda, as I am an owner of one, but I will say that I think it could be an excellent choice for you based on the parameters of the situation you've described.

 

I own a 2011 bmw 335i and i've yet to run into any problems with it other than having to change brakes and water pump. Idk I think it's a pretty good car as long as you don't overuse it and drive like a dipshit

 

What is benz expensive? The german trio (Mercedes, BMW, Audi) are all comparable in maintenance.
