Selling for GP is actually against Jagex rules. It falls under trust trading and usually name hoarding as well. You can sell the name here without having to worry, though. So long as you don't run around advertising in-game, you'll be fine.

 

Can I buy a name from another player with game GP / items?

There is no ‘safe’ way to transfer a name from one account to another, which means that obtaining a name from another player always carries the risk that the name you want is taken by somebody else before you get to put it on your account.

In addition, any agreement you make with another player which involves trading them GP or items for a name is known as a ‘trust trade’ – these type of trades often end up with one side of the partnership not keeping their side of the deal, so the buyer not only doesn’t get the name they wanted – they also lose any GP or items they traded for the name. It is also possible that even if you purchase a name successfully the original owner may subsequently challenge the change and deny that they agreed to the transaction, and we simply don't have the tools and resources to act as mediators in these type of disputes.

For these reasons we would always advise people to not purchase names from other players - it’s far better to choose a new name yourself without involving anybody else.
