    Modern world vs. Natural selection

Well, i was sitting here reading the paper on how people get medication to cure diseases and such. Which lead me to the question of this : Is medication getting rid of natural selection? You don't have retards running into the wilderness (as often) and getting ate off. You have natural selection in the lower animal class (yes, humans are animals) but do we still have it in humans?

So the main questions here are :

~Do we have natural selection in humans still? Give examples
~If so, is it a good thing?
~Is the advancement of medication replacing it?

Well, I think that natural selection has really stopped for humans since we can keep people alive that should have died... But, people still get Darwin awards for dying in really stupid ways... Like one dude won it since he was emailing on his laptop while driving crashed and died... Thats natural selection for ya. :D

But I do believe it has stopped for the main part...

Well, it most likely helps the spreading of genetic problems since we can still live with them now.

Well, I read something about this in a schoolbook. It was an article, but I don't have the book here with me. I think Darwin wrote about this, but I'm not really sure, since I don't have the book with he source with me.

It says that humans will no longer evolve, since natural selection is no longer valid, the weak are just as likely to reproduce as the strong.

We absolutely do but it's not natural selection by disease and sickness. I believe that it's now natural selection by intelligence. Those who are unintelligent may die accidental deaths.

I agree with your first argument. Our intelligence may still be evolving, but our bodies won't.
I don't agree with your second argument, since even intelligent people die in accidents.

Natural selection has pretty much stopped in humans but it's not really necesary anyways since we have so much technology.

Only the intelligent get to pass their genes on so I consider that natural selection

Can you explain it why dumb parents get smart kids sometimes? Or vice versa?

Study and education. Genes are a factor but not the only one

well, the "predator" aspect is clearly gone for humans, and disease is less influental as it used to be.....but breeding is still a powerful agent of natural selection

people still mate with each other based on traits like physical appearence ETC, so it is sitll a source of natural selection.

but yeah, humans have pretty much gotten themselves out of the natural selection system

for humans natural selection is basically humans killing other humans unless there is a new virus and deadly as the bubonic plague

too bad there isn't much natural selection in humans. its horrible seeing children born to burnout drug addicts and drunks who should have died off long ago. Those children will usually grown up to be like their parents which shows the weak are still reproducing :/

No medication isn't getting rid fo natural selection, humans evolved to trump their opponents not by strength but by brain power, medication IS evolution.

~Do we have natural selection in humans still? Give examples

    Yes.

Cancer-related genes, People doing stupid things, etc.

Almost all deaths fall in a way under natural selection, if you were hit by a bus for example, an evolutionist may say you lacked the sensory to detect the bus.

~If so, is it a good thing?

In 1904 the first plane flew.

In 1969 man landed on the moon.

I'd say that's quite in improvement over apes.

~Is the advancement of medication replacing it?

See above, medication is simply a form of how the species has evolved.

When we came out of the trees humans realized that the most effective way to survive in this world was to stick together, in doing so one who created medication for a population is supported by that population (in modern society that would be by money).

We really don't have natural selection anymore and in some ways its a bad thing because if idiotic/retarded people/physically handicapped (from birth) reproduce it hurts the human race.

Most of the time they don't reproduce as much though.

It would stop some but not all.

Genetic related diseases that can be helped with medication is still being passed around. We won't have a natural way to stop it, but the medication will.
