Well, every year in 7th and 8th grade, the science department requires that you do a science fair project. I need some help on it. If I don't do it, I fail second semester, and I repeat 8th grade science -.-.

So my topic for the fair is:
what kind of water will affect a plant's growth the most - tap, bottled, distilled, sparkling, or purified

I would like to know which one will affect the plant's growth the most, and why? Don't say like tap, cuz I used it before, but explain. Like explain why, what minerals or w.e. make it grow better than the other.

Thanks for the help. And if you can help more with my project than just telling me, please post your msn/aims, and I would like to add you to ask for more help.

And if anyone here helps me with my project a lot, like adds me and helps me, I could pay maybe $20-40 bucks, but you would have to help me research, unless you're an expert on this.

Do some research on your own, it really isn't hard :p. Also the feeling of knowing you did it yourself is just great. If I come across anything Ill let you know though.

But to answer the question I would probably say purified. I am in no way basing this off of anything, I would just assume that pure water would help the plant grow faster and stronger. (This is due to all the unnecessary minerals that are filtered out). Once again, Im just talking off the top of my head, but it seems like the correct answer =]

Sparkling water will make it grow faster because it has magic drugs in it

Tap water would be my guess. As long as its not hard and not too much sulphur in it, the minerals and other goodies in it should aid in the growth of it.

For starters, purified and distilled water are practically the same thing. Distilling water is a form of purifying it to remove any types of impurities such as ions, dirt, and all that crap.

I'd say tap or bottled water since the minerals help the plant. Just the problem of exactly whats inside tap and bottled water and to see if it does help a plant. That part is supposed to be the research you do.

And for sparkling water, my thoughts are mixed. Sparkling water is carbonated water which has dissolved CO2 in it. So maybe it'll help since plants need CO2 to grow. But then again its dissolved into the water so...

Well you still gotta research this stuff. I'm not 100% sure, just remembering what I learned from biology class.

My grandparents think that rainwater is better than water out of the tap. (for plants I mean)

I think that water is fucking water.

I don't know if someone already suggested this, but why don't you actually test this out? It would make your experiment much more valid and it would appear as if you put a lot of time into it.

He has too anyway in order to get a good grade for it.

I'm guessing he just wants some background knowledge, so he can formulate a hypothesis. Probably just asking us because he is too lazy to research on his own?

I've done research, and there are a bunch od different answers.

I believe back in 8th grade, some kid did this and mineral water worked for him the best.

You're retarded for saying that. That's basically the same thing as saying "I think Coke is the same as Sprite is the same as water." Water comes in many different forms; most liquids are a composition of H2O and some solvents. Water out of the tap has many ions and traces of dirt, but almost no CO2. Distilled/Purified water will probably have no added effect, because it is literally supposed to be JUST H2O. I think that mineral water should work nicely, since it has CO2, but the question is whether or not the excess CO2 would harm the plant. I'm no chemistry/bio expert, but honestly - form a hypothesis and briefly test it, or ask on some science-site. I think you'll get a better result, and, ultimately, a better grade.

Just briefly answering the question, I think it would just be normal bottle of water, not distilled, that would help the plant grow the most. This is because of (as a couple of people have said) the minerals in it. If you've ever done plant anatomy etc. You should know that plants that have good soil will grow quickly. So what does the soil do? It allows to the plant to do osmosis - IE the uptake of water. The plant takes up minerals (the more minerals, the quicker I guess) and so creates a concentration gradient. Basically, there is no water in the cell, so it naturally moves into the cell because of the concentration gradient.
I'm not sure if all of this is right or not, but I think it's a half decent start. Like the others have said also, form a hypothesis etc.

Tap, is has more minerals that plants need, where as Purified and the rest are just water, no minerals...

But perhaps a mineral enhanced water will do even better?

Hmm, I might swap the dam sparkling
water with mineral water, I don't know
yet.

I would've chosen a completely different topic. I would've chosen like how dyed water can change the colour of some flowers. Like those white daisy's or whatever they are, that way you could bring in an example. You could then explain why they change colour, why others don't etc etc.

No, that won't help as much anyways.
I've come down to the conclusion that
it is probably tap water, lol.
