I'm pretty sure a computer specialist is anyone who specializes in computers. That could be anywhere between someone working at nerds on call or someone with a phd in computer science.
computer support specialist?
"According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, "computer support specialists provide technical assistance, support and advice to customers and users".
Environment
Computer specialists often work in well-lit comfortable offices or computer labs. Some computer specialists also have the option to telecommute. Like other workers who are at a computer for long periods of time, computer support specialists are susceptible to eyestrain, back and neck discomfort, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Computer support specialists may interact with customers or colleagues on the phone, face-to-face, email or other forms of communication. Some work as consultants and may work within a client's office for months at a time.
Education and Training
Employees prefer hiring applicants with some formal college education. A degree in computer science or information systems is sometimes a requirement. Other jobs may require an associate degree in something computer-related.
Certification
In the absence of a degree, certification and experience are essential. Certification training programs are provided by software or hardware vendors and product makers. Such certification can help people qualify for entry-level jobs.
Other Qualifications
Those interested in becoming a computer specialist must have strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills. Troubleshooting and helping other people are major parts of the job. They must also be competent in their form of communication, whether it be writing through emails or professionally communicating on the phone. Writing skills are especially essential when preparing manuals for customers and employees.
Median Salary
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median salary for a computer support specialist was $41,470 in May 2006."
