School: How much do we really learn?

How much we learn is how much we put in the effort to listen and memorise.

We learn those seemingly unnecessary methods because we want to do get in to a good Polytechnic / Junior College (I come from an Asian country, so Polytechnic should be College for you guys). Without a good grade in the core subjects, English, Mathematics & Science, we are not able to get into that Polytechnic that we both desire and hold our favored courses.

Yes, some things that we learn in school are just ridiculously useless, but hey, you might need those things that you deemed "useless & unnecessary" useful in the future. Who knows?

Most of the stuff taught in lower level schools are meant to develop your mind or brain, not necessarily with the intent on having you remember it.

What we learn in school is the foundation from which we choose a life path. For example, we learn we are better at linguistics and writing like foreign languages and history or we learn we are better with numbers, the arts, sport.. from this, we usually choose something at college or university. There, we are prepared for a career. Without school, yes you can get a job and yes in extreme cases you'll end up a millionaire. But an education definitely stands you in good stead for later life.

Also personally I like to learn, life would be dull without intelligent or opinionated discussion. We wouldn't be able to problem solve, look at other perspectives or really.. think about much other than what X is doing at the weekend.

Not only that, but we learn a lot of life lessons at school. Sharing, interacting with peers, deadlines, how to study for later life, a schedule, independence, respect.. the list goes on.

School is so unproductive tbh. Think about high school for example, you spend about 35 hours a week at school. How much of that knowledge do you really take home with you and apply to real life.

To the people arguing that school is a good way to engage your mind in something and keep structure in a kids life, I ask this question. Why can't it engage a students mind and keep structure in their life WHILE teaching them relevant courses.

The only classes I found relevant through out my high school experience was English (to an extent) and a business elective class I chose. I also had a huge problem with how much time was wasted at school.

Curriculum is designed with purpose. Some curriculum seeks to teach method more than application. Yet other curriculum can be the other way around.

Many people in my classes have balked at math and asked the purpose of it, and yet I actively and consciously use it in my own personal endeavors because I actually know how to use it. Similarly, I actively use my knowledge of chemistry in personal projects in which materials and reactivity are of grave consideration (particularly for food purposes). In these cases school will teach you the theory but it is up to YOU to learn how to apply it.

It has also been mentioned that school teaches a child how to learn, and this is the most direly necessary skill of all. It is nigh on impossible to teach what you seem to call "relevant courses" for every single student (at my school there was about 2,000, on the first of two campuses). The curriculum is there to provide a general grounding and to introduce such things, rather than actually produce skill. I found I was applying lots of what I was learning in school once I actually started studying engineering at university, where I had to apply it.

Adding on to Swan's response, it's absolutely vital that schools teach students how to process the information given by teachers into something that they are able to comprehend and understand on their own. Even if the content taught appears utterly worthless or useless, you should think of yourself as being taught how to deal with the shit thrown at you, and how to process it into something that you can reformulate and use. This can't really be explicitly taught, but it's a vital skill that should be developed, and is particularly important in college.

I believe the purpose of school in our early to adolescence stages (elementary to high school) is to develop a strong work ethic and development of basic skills to proceed into more rigorous levels of education (college/university). While in college, though I'm not quite there yet, I presume that you'd learn quite a bit throughout your 4+ years there.

I personally was off school for 6 months before my GCSE exams (the exams you get when you're 15/16 in the UK) and all I did was read from revision quides etc and I passed everything, and exceeded expectations. And now doing my AS level exams I'm getting the same results, when I'm in school everyday....

Everyone's different of course and I don't really concentrate in school if I'm honest. But I think I could survive without school. I proved that as well really

In my opinion I believe that you learn basic knowledge at home as a child, but as you grow older you become more dedicated to your school work, thus having the knock on effect that you need to learn more to be able to achieve the grades your parents and you want(the best).

Learning is a crucial part of life and without it we would all be stuck in the stones age, think about it, how did language first come about, being able to speak to one another as we do now. IMO i feel knowledge is the key to success and school is yet another milestone until you reach your personal goal which could be your finals or further education.

Schools only teach you shit to get a job, and then people keep studying trying to get the best job that they believe exists. School is a system to learn to get a job (to me a job is modern slavery). To be honest, learning from the school system, doesn't help at all, It actually rots your brain with shit they want you to know. I'm not saying don't finish school, i'm just giving you my opinions and giving you my advice. My advice: Finish University, start investing in property, etc. Start your own business. This is getting off topic.

I can honestly say school was a waste of time for me, yeah I got some average grades - but that's just from revising mock exams and remembering the questions.

    Apprenticeships ftw.

English is essential and school taught me that. Maths too as we use numbers daily.

These are the real subjects that I would say made me enjoyed school besides these, the other subjects doesn't really apply to my everyday life.

But to get good career, we need the certificate itself. Hence why we are studying eventhough some subjects are not applicable in life.

    I myself, learnt a lot.

I went to a college prep school and I learned much more than I ever thought I did in school. College was super easy compared to what I had to do in high school.
