In a community which is so against scamming, it's surprising to see that so many actively encourage the scamming of others within RS.

Let me begin by introducing myself - I played RS in a legitimate manner over the years - I made my money through legitimate means, and the only rule I've now broken is the RWT-ing rule - I sell the gold that I make in RuneScape.

A large proportion of the community also centralises around botting - which again is fair enough. Whilst I don't bot myself, I don't mind it, because the only real negative consequence is inflation/annoying the legit players who want to use the resources in the same area.

I was reading a thread about someone complaining about being banned for luring; one player came along and said that he deserved to be banned, and was then slated by many other players on the thread, who all believed that luring was perfectly just and fair.

I on the other hand agreed wholeheartedly - I am strongly against any form of scamming, including within the game itself. I think it's totally unfair that someone who has spent years playing the game legitimately, should have all/some of their wealth evoked at the expense of some gold seller.

In my opinion if you are someone with the mindset of someone who thinks that 'scamming in RS is okay', then you may as well have the same attitude to scamming in the real world, Sythe included.

So what's your attitude to scamming within the game. Do you think it's a good/bad thing. And if you agree with it, why so?

Interested to hear your thoughts...

Tl/dr... Is scamming in RS acceptable?

Never scammed, never been scammed, never will.

Everything you said is true.
It's the belief that "you will not get caught" on RS when you are scamming, while on Sythe you most likely will get banned. Then again, that's not a problem for new members who collect vouches and posts like crazy just to be able to rip someone off a couple mills.
I think anyone and everyone who looks at luring and other such "in-game scams" as "OK" is highly prone to scam on Sythe if the right circumstances arise.

I definitely agree with this. I think people that scam in rs definitely have the mentality to come on Sythe and scam also. If their main goal in rs is to scam for gp/items, why not come on Sythe and also try their luck scamming for gp/items? Now, if they've made gp/items successfully scamming on Sythe, why not try real life $ now? "I mean I did a couple legit 'double money' trades in rs and then scammed someone that trusted me for 50m, so why don't I just get a few vouches, tell someone to go first, and run off with $100 easily, too?"
It also possibly depends on their morals, loyalty to each community, irl problems people are facing, temptation to scam at the given opportunities after trying to be legit, etc. It's a tough thing to exactly narrow down, because with my time here at this forum, I've been scammed by respected/legit members and not-so-legit members.

I dont consider luring a scam, as its also your responsibility to know how runescape works.

I dont agree with old skool scams that were like showing someone 10m an quickly changing it down to 1m an spamming accept trade.Or the guthans spear for a slayer spear. They are under handed.

Scamming in RS is not a federal felony.
Scamming in real life is, it's called internet fraud, theft, larceny, the list goes on.

There is the difference.

On a personal level, I do somewhat despise scammers. Taking advantage of a person is something I am not for. While I can appreciate how 'Token economics' plays it's part in mitigating the severity of a scammers act when scamming online, I still do find it repulsing how people can stomp and tread over their peers for minute personal gain.

As for luring, I don't support 'lurers', however anyone stupid enough to get lured really doesn't warrant my sympathy.

I dislike scamming.

If you put Runescape players in a position where they can scam another player then I reckon that 90% or more of those players would take up that opportunity. The game is so far detached from the realities of life that people tend to transmogrify their behaviour (from how they would act in every day life - to how they act in Runescape).

As for luring, I don't support 'lurers', however anyone stupid enough to get lured really doesn't warrant my sympathy.

I definitely feel sympathy for those that are lured. Not everyone has your smarts or maturity - some of these people are young kids who are coerced by (probably) older players to *insert lure here*, which they do in good faith.

Never scammed, never been scammed, never will.

Everyone that I have seen say this, or put this in their sig, gets banned for scamming sooner or later.

However, it's semi-true.
I do not like to see people get lured, as it's fooling someone for their money.
Sure they are stupid to fall for it, doesn't mean they need to lose their hard earned work because of a mistake they have made.

Luring, like making someone go into the wild thinking they are going to pk people with you, then you and your team kill them, is perfectly fine. Since they ARE knowingly in the wild, and should have taken gear they are prepared to lose.

Now.. as for rare luring and tricking people into going into wild to lose their items, I do not like that and it should be considered scamming.

I'm talking about moral's in this thread, but you do raise a valid point. In reality however, the chance of someone getting prosecuted for stealing virtual items is very close to zero. I don't think that legal repurcussions are even a slight deterrent from scamming. In my opinion, some people are scammers, and others aren't.

It's a simple case of 'not knowing the system', and has little to do with stupidity. The simple fact of the matter is, one of the parties is lying, in order to make themselves a financial profit, at the expense of an innocent, fee paying, legitimate RS player. Ultimately I'd never condone that.

ive been keylogged back in the day when having a mill was a huge deal. i lost a mill and my account got hacked and i had no recovs. iv been scammed various rune items, money, items, etc. i hate scammers, but now i dont get scammed because i got smarter and i guess you could say i got scammed enough to learn better. some learn the hard way i guess.

Everyone is a scammer at a certain price.
The above is true, and every single one of you know it. If you could get away with a 50b scam, you would. It's just that simple.
The reason people used to scam and do it now on RuneScape is that they're twelve. They see that 1m as the ultimate life goal, and will do anything to get it, no matter how sad the attempt.
For all of us on Sythe that trade every week, a lot of us go by billions without even thinking twice. Back on your first days on Scape, scamming was (projj) the norm. I remember starting and scamming was how most people made their money alongside merching. The only scam i remember trying was the "drop and press alt+f4 for dupe :D" And being scammed myself with a r2h/addy2h quick swap.

Why would scamming be acceptable?!

People who scam need to GTFO, It's absolutly pathetic.

Everyone is a scammer at a certain price.

I completely disagree... Yea, having fast amounts of money passing through you would be tempting, but that's what honest people are for..

Life is NOT about money.

Scamming in RS is not a federal felony.

Wrong, your stealing the property of JaGeX LTD.

Everyones a scammer, it's just the price and circumstance.

I don't condone it either, I simply stated my unwillingness to exhibit compassion for people who obviously don't care. If you cared about something so much to be cut about losing it, you'd take necessary precautions to ensure it never happened. If you don't care, then what are you complaining about?

Scamming is only acceptable if the person your scamming deserves it. You see someone being a SUPER huge ass all the time, or you see someone scamming (or really badly failing to do so) someone else, I think they deserve to be scammed back.

Otherwise, no. Scamming is for 13 year olds douchebags who are too stupid to get their own shit.

I agree partially..

I back-scam people all the time in Runescape, Mostly giving the money back to the F2P kid that lost his 200k bank so some "doubler"..

But no, I don't support scamming..

I totally agree with this post.

Scamming is wrong, wether its on RS, IRL, or on Sythe, you're still doing something very selfish and spiteful, for your own personal gain.

I wouldn't say everyone is... perhaps just more than meets the eye.

This is the whole point of a scam, and this logic could be applied to any scam. It's a bit like someone scamming someone on Sythe by doing a PayPal chargeback, and pointing the finger of blame at the person who lost out, simply because they used PayPal.

What I'm trying to say is, whilst I can see where your coming from, I don't think that the recipient of the scam should receive any of the blame. I've been lured in my time, especially as a young/newer player. New players often just aren't aware of these scams.

Any form of scamming is totally un-acceptable, regardless of the game or amount or situation.

People need to learn to obtain their own items, gear and skills without stealing others with impulse and jealousy.

Morals need to be learnt, when people grow up - although it may not be till a later stage, they will realize that stealing just isn't right.

No your not, if no transferal of ownership has taken place, then please how is that stealing?

Everyone is, believe me. Everyone has a price. However it's hard to prove over the internet. Suffice to say, coercion will crack even the toughest nuts.

It could be, and that person should have taken necessary precautions if he cared enough. Withstanding that, that's internet fraud.

I'm not blaming them, I'm just not empathizing for them.
