Hi everyone,

Don't know if this is the right forum to post this in, but I saw a post explaining why packet modification doesn't work in terms of cheating. I'm not a noob, and I'm not about to tell you that Terrankiller is wrong. In fact, I totally agree with him. Modifying packets will not help you cheat in RuneScape. To my point: This post could have gone in the "Server Development" forum, but I decided to put it here, sorry if it's the wrong place.

Basically, I'm wondering whether or not someone's got a more technical specification of the packet format which the server sends. At this point in time, I'm looking at it from a strictly educational point of view - but I'm considering what I could do with this information.

I'm assuming that (since there are private servers out there; although I've never played on one) there's something which explains this packet format in more detail. If there isn't, I guess I'll just continue my analysis, and see what I come up with.

The point: I want a more detailed specification for the RuneScape "protocol".

Thanks.

For anyone who's interested: I analysed some packets recieved when I was mining different ore... But I took particular interest in message delivered by the packets:

Code:
! You manage to mine some mithril
$ You manage to mine some adamantite
. You manage to mine some iron

(Sorry this isn't exactly correct. There shouldn't be a space between the characters '!', '$' and '.' and the actual message. vBulletin would not post this properly.)

The characters at the beginning of each message obviously aren't "regular" characters. In fact, I should provide the appropriate base 16 (Hexadecimal), and base 10 (Decimal) values:

Code:
! = 0x21 = 33
$ = 0x24 = 36
. = 0x1E = 30

Interestingly, these values correspond to the length of each of the messages, with an additional two bytes (consistently, 0x2E00) at the end of the string.

Why did I bother adding this to the end of my post? I guess it kind of proves that I have some idea of what I'm doing. I'm not just another n00b looking for quick answers. If anyone could help me figure this out (or point me in the right direction) I'd greatly appreciate it.

Oh yeah, and if I posted in the wrong forum: Sorry.
