Religion Affecting Personality

Religion Affecting Personality
Well first of all, I believe in a higher power...(God) but i don't conform to a religion. I do believe in heaven, but that doesn't effect my personality what so ever.. I don't WANT to be rewarded I just find it common sense to be kinder to people and not be a jackass. Even if i knew there was no heaven.
No it dose not effect ones personality. Their are Christians in bad neighborhoods that kill people. Its all a matter of how you grew up, were, when, who raised you, your surrounding's..ext..

Thats exactly what I said in the begginging of the thread. Also even the bible says follow the laws of the land and also use your morals to guide you, both of these things atheist and followers of god have in common.

But in order to want to be rewarded you would have to choose a religion, you believe in a higher being, but you just don't know which 1.

I dont think that it does limit your acts, no matter of religion, expects if you are some islam or something

How? Wouldn't followers of God have a better chance of doing good deeds? They have the same potential, because we are all human, but aren't Christians more encouraged to stay obedient than others? Atheists don't gain the pressure nor influence, as we do in the church.

Yes, we believe in God.

Yeah, I agree they do seem alot nicer, state the reason...hm I don't know why but it's the way it seems to me.

Personally, I think that neither is better then the other, and being encouraged to behave can come from anywhere, like family and/or friends...

When I said that I was only talking to Fro, since he was not a christian but still believes in god, he doesn't derive his beliefs from one high being, likes the concepts and morals that it can come with.

Eh, of course atheists and christians have the same potential of a kind personality and morale. And true, it can be encouraged from family and friends, depending on their personality. Although, christians usually get more encouraged and pressured to behave nicely. I believe religious people take more time into encouraging and raising someone's inner-self, than an atheist.

As an atheist, I can claim that I do nice things at the same rate as any good god believer...

Except I don't think that there's a god watching me do all of them.

That's where I think that atheists are superior in terms of morals. We don't steal things because we know stealing is bad, whereas someone else steals things because he knows that a security camera is watching him.

What inner-self, do you mean self-esteem or something? I am secure with myself as an athiest. I wasn't always an athiest either, my mother is christian and my Father is a Jehovah's witness, and I have to battle with them constantly, and I can do it personnal and in a well mannered way. And I do it not for a god, but for myself and the people around me. I think that promotes my innerself.

I like that example and the way you compared god to a camera. LMAO

*doesn't steal things.

Mm. It's in some Richard Dawkins book. I forget which. But the idea is that religion =/= morality.

IMO this is a silly topic.
obviously they are raised differently, how can they not act different.

By different, what are you implying?

Is a religious upbringing any better than an atheist one?

Excatly, it is how you are raised, and since I the people around you effect your personality, Morals will be intacted with or with-out religion...

Religion Affecting Personality
it depends on how you were raised, if you were brought up in a christian family, yeah your going to see there point of views and life styles.

Religion Affecting Personality
It's true that religion 'brainwashes' people. Anyone that doesn't follow religion can see that. Go science.

Religion Affecting Personality
I think that religious do tend to be nicer. Although, I used to live in a community where there was a church on every block. Most of the people that I communicated with seem to have been stuck-up. Although, I would say that most of them were really into their religion. So other than that, I've meet some really nice Christians, Muslims, etc. Most of the Atheists I met are usually less pleasant then people who do have a religion. I guess it's mostly on how you were brought up though. Like if you're really into you're religion I think they tend to teach their kids that they are better than everyone else. Although that isn't the case for everyone who is deep into their religion. Although, I am an Atheist, I am pretty kind. Although thats what other people tell me.

It seems that religious upbringing only breeds intolerance.

If you go too far fundamentalist that is. There's no such thing as fundamentalist atheism.
