REAL guitar.

Ok so im tired of these kids saying "Oh i play guitar good" and then playing garbage music like punk, emo, screamo, "Hardcore" ETC(I understand listening to it you may like how it sounds im saying that technically those genres aren't skilled)

Real guitar playing is people like Yngwie Malmsteen, Joe Satriani ETC

Heres what i mean...And yes i can play like this ive been playing guitar my whole life just about.(Im not trying to fight im simply saying...If you claim to be good...Then actually be good.)

Most people who post themselves playing guitar are mostly just looking for tips and feedback, and/or to simply express their love for the instrument and/or the genres they play, not to show off.

 

I know im not talking about just sythe I mean in general.I respect real musicians.

In my opinion it sounds like you have no idea what REAL guitar is. I've played guitar myself for five years and you can't say that such broad genres as "hardcore" and "screamo" aren't skilled!



Listen to this piece of music whether you like it or not, just don't tell me this is not skillfull. The rhythms, the guitar and ESPECIALLY the drums are crazy. Show some respect for the other kinds of music out there even though you don't like it. Yes I know there are loads of bands of the above mentioned genres that do suck, but it's the same in every genre... Some sucks, some's great.

Edit: I read your post once more and it says you've played guitar your whole life? Then why the hell don't you know that these can be immensely technically advanced? More than most other genres...

 

Yes Opeth is one of my favorite bands ^_^ good choice!

And yes i love listening to death metal, metal, reggae, blues, classical and much more as far as SKILL death metal isnt hard to play but i love playing it and listening to it...And another example is Dragonforce...The guitar is amazing but i hate listening to them because i dont like the music...Im saying that 90% of hardcore/Screamo/Emo bands are power chord playing whiners that get paid for crap music as for grindcore/Dethcore i listen to both but skilled...Not even close(The vocals are a bit harder at times but guitar wise its easy)

Joe Satriani, fair enough. He's a god, lol, but Yngwie isn't... He just plays arpeggios fast and clean. None of his music has any ya know.. Soul.. Something that makes it enjoyable to listen to.
That's 'Real Guitar'.
If you mean skill... All genres can have skillful guitarists. Genres are just the type of music. Not a label for the skill of the musicians.

 

I agree but until you can play arpeggios better than Malmsteen you cant say he isn't good...Same applies to all music...I can play most of those genres better than the bands who are actually touring so i can say they aren't good...I just feel that most people make/listen to music that's "cool" or "different" just to stand out and music isn't about that its about(As you said) "Soul" and feeling.

 

As far as I'm concerned ScriptinAintEasy is talking about the technical abilities of guitar players and not their souls. Yngwie Malmsteen has great techniques, but I agree I don't like listening to him.

Technical Ability... yes Malmsteen is good but his musical knowledge seems very limited judging by his songs..
Musical Ability isn't ONLY about speed.

This comes down to a taste thing, not "who's better".

Do I appreciated QUALITY music? Most definitely.

This is QUALITY but not necessarily something I can enjoy.

Would I go to the concert when offered free tickets? Sure. For an emo show, no.

Don't give me this garbage just because you have some guitar instructor that claims to give you great artists in your classical bred world that punk music isn't "REAL" guitar.

Try to keep an open mind for once and then you can say when something sucks or not.

Just because you can play more scales also doesn't mean you can play the instrument better.

 

I would beg to differ Yngwie plays quite soulfully such as with his songs evil eye, and far beyond the sun to name a few. Just because he happens to have more skill at a certain aspect of the instrument he plays then another and shows that doesn't mean he is talentless anyone who bothers to make music has to put some soul\meaning into there songs. I would have to say you have a bit too learn before you can talk shit about someone such as Yngwie especially when he put your "god" of guitar to shame at G3

I will say as a few other people have said though that all genres have lots of talent\soul not just quick or technical music. Now I can't see the videos you posted so I can't really comment any further. care to tell me what songs they are?

Joe Satriani is a god. The only mainstream REAL guitar that I can think of is DragonForce, and although there solos are sometimes messy live (well they used to be) you still have to admit that they have talent.

And btw, DF have improved x4954375 over the past year, I saw them live and was in the very front row and they could play pretty much everything they've recorded.

However, they are nowhere near the best in the world. But they do have talent.
