Community Awards

Hello all,

I was thinking about something that this forum was missing, and one of the things i noticed is that there was no event for/by the community. (Except for the tournaments ofcourse)

What i am suggesting is a fun event, where different miniranks could be earned. Each and every month there would be a thread posted. On this thread there would be a form with different aspects of the forums. For example:

Most trusted Sythe user:
Friendliest Sythe user:
Funniest Sythe user:
Best Sythe staff member:

These are just some quick examples, and could be worked out way better.

After 1 week of nominating the forum users for all the open spots, the winners would be awarded with a minirank (untradeable ofcourse).

This has been done on and off throughout the years on Sythe.

It generally runs for a little while and dies off as people complain about it being a popularity contest and thing it loses its excitement as the same people win over and over. If enough of the community is interested in it returning, the Community Development Team would be happy to review it and consider taking it on again.

It should include regulations on how many times people can win a year or stipulations built on previous mistakes. Brendan mentioned that it becomes a popularity contest, maybe have unbiased judges that view users and staff members throughout each month and tally up a winner. This could be a few people from the Community Development Team or even staff if they're interested. Whoever decides to be an unbiased judge can receive a "Judge" mini-rank and be disqualified from entering the actual contest.

We had regulations such as members can't win it back to back, but people never really read the rules and it became very complex. Regarding "Unbiased Judges", the best way would be to make everyone in the community vote, however have the posts moderated so people can't just vote for whoever everyone else is voting for. When we do this, people don't find it exciting and it ends up becoming inactive with few members voting.

I loved the idea and was always happy to run it, but keep throwing suggestions at how we can run it better and we might be able to find a way if people still want it.

 

Your logic is sound, except I believe we're are slightly out of sync. You're looking at this as being a way to bring the community together by the voting process itself, I'm looking at it by promoting active community participation. People will want a goal to work towards and promoting activity with displayable gifts correlate together. They are also receiving recognition for their dedication.

I'm suggesting that setting up unbiased judges would be beneficial because the voting process displayed in that thread seems pointless and extremely biased. People will pick the most popular members, their friends, and a few will just randomly choose. Having three people dedicated to the process would ensure the entire community that there are no favorites. People should be working towards the rewards and grow the community.

 

Thank you both for the amazing feedback. As Rity said, we'll have to make it as unbiased as possible. I think that everyone should be able to vote, but that there has to be strict regulations. It they get ignored, people should just be disqualified from entering/winning. Also, if we add special mini-ranks i think that the people definitely would like to join in. This because miniranks = life.

 

id be happy to bring this back. sounds like something for the cdt to do. also, we already have a big annual one of these every xmas, but could add new/exciting categories and hold it every so often throughout the year as well. id support that

 

I believe it would be beneficial to add fun sections of this the cdt yearly awards.

That really isn't the issue. I can't see Bogla not winning "Most Trustworthy" every time around, to be honest.

Support, though. I'd love to see this come back with extra sections like funniest, most boring, etc.

I agree, but let's be honest, members such as Bogla, Arcus etc don't really participate in the community. Yes they have helped Sythe in a huge way and i think that everyone thanks them for doing that, but they're just here for the market, not really to interact with the community. I think there should be rules to be nominated too, such as a certain level of involvement with the community other than just the business perspective.

 

How do you quantify involvement? If you make that a rule, it just returns to a popularity contest as to who is considered "involved enough"

 

lol ya i guess you're right never looked at that angle.

 

With that i mean that there should be some involvement other than just vouching, buying/selling gold. A bit of interaction should be a necessity in my opinion, but that's just me.

Also, i think that people shouldn't be able to win the same nomination for more than once in a row, to cut down on the bias/obvious wins.

 

Bringing up Bogla and Arcus is random and irrelevant. You're assuming they would win community awards because they're popular in the market, but that wasn't the case. Go to Community General and search for Member of the Month threads. You'll see what I mean.

Why are we making the event into a public vote? Just use trusted judges.

The public doesn't even need to know the categories being judged. The group dictating the event can decide types to monitor each month, then rewards active members of the community with mini-ranks and appreciation. The system can change each month; that pushes people just generally to stay contributing to the community. This type of system should be designed to promote long-lasting activity, not just a one time juice at the end of each month that has everyone biased vote. That is pointless and will die off like the previous attempts.

I figured I'll say it once more before letting it go; it just seems like it solves all of the issues people are speaking about right now.

 

That's always possible. We can have a Best Non-Staff/Non-CDT Member category, and then a best CDT member and best Staff member category.

Perhaps it could be integrated into Sythe Quarterly? Would everyone before monthly or Quarterly/Seasonally?
