Problem with Java on Linux

I have been out of the VPS business for quite some time now, and just recently decided to get back into it.

I have a CentOS VPS and am trying to get Java to run properly.
I installed Java and JRE via yum, but am still having problems.

I can't run Java via my browser, and it is taking FOREVER to fetch the updates on my nexus client.

It sat at %19 for over an hour so I restarted the client and now it won't go past %0.

I am familiar with my operating system and VPS botting, but perhaps I missed something when setting up my bot (I am going off my memory from months ago). Is it pretty normal for the fetching updates when loading runescape to take forever?
