Poverty; is it cureable?

Wrong. For all intents and purposes, there is an unlimited amount of wealth in the universe. I can take 100 men off the streets, bring them to a plantation I own, and have them mine gold. I make a huge profit, pay them handsomely, everybody's happy.

wealth=resources. which are limited. certainly we can squeeze out more wealth as compared to today, but particurlaly in terms of food and commodities, there is little more room for growth* and much more room for downsizing.

*this is assuming we are stupid enough to not do something about:

Exploding populations
Ill-used farmland
nonrenewable energy
biofuels(i.e. the eradication of)

Poverty in the third world is hard to "cure" because the third world hasn't developed a sufficient level of government-maintained infrastructure, subsidies for business etc, general security: I mean the right conditions for business to flourish. The industrialized world gets along so well because there is a much better environment for trade, with socialism for the rich and everything :p

That's my two cents anyway.

It's not that hard to work yourself out of poverty. If you finished high school, you can EASILY get money from the federal gov't to pay for community college and then some. Although nowadays, the value of a degree is dropping. That is, if you live in the US. As for African and Indian countries, that's the responsibility of their individual countries. If they can't do anything from lack of funds or war, then tough shit, that happens in the world. You just have a shitty government.

To be quite honest there's nothing WE can do, being the public.

I once read what I believe to be a 'fact' that if the world stopped making weapons, artilary & nuclear weapons for a DAY, the money not used on that day would help to find a cure for cancer within a week.

It's the same principle, too much money is being spent on things pretty useless (killing people for instance).

Bump ;)

Poverty will always exist. It is the bottom rung of society and always will be in every society. American poverty would be vast wealth in Nigeria. Point being poverty is here to stay, utopias do not exist.

I think this thread is referring to people in a sub-standard conditions. I think poor people in the west deserve no sympathy because they choose to be lazy when there are endless opportunities for them.

Poverty can be cured all you need is food, water, healthcare, education and economic development once those are in place it's a permanent fix. Yeah it's not our responsibility but as part of the same race we owe it to one other.

It's about Education, which creates a good future. In these "Third world countries" Education should be upgraded.

There is no way we can cure it in our current state for these reasons.

1. there are too many people
2. there is not enough space on the earth
3. the state of the earth will not allow it.

The reason for me saying those above is for the fact that to feed everyone we would have to kill off a large amount of the worlds population for us all to live decently.

There is not enough room on the earth for farming and harvesting foods, or warm places for people to live comfortably.

The world is constantly going through "catastrophes" such as hurricanes , tornado's, tsunami's, earth quakes etc. that continue to demolish parts of civilization and we simply do not have the means or resources to continue repairing already well financed places and making new places for the people who suffer from poverty.

Only in a communist society.

There's plenty of arable land and therefore food, for everyone on this planet. There is easily enough room for many more billions of people to live.

Poverty isn't cureable because people with power are mostly concerned with other things, like accruing money for themselves.

But if it was made so organisations like the E.U made annual donations (Or something along those lines) to countries solely for educational purposes, would the world not find it a whole lot easier to get out of this rut it is in?

High income countries already help out other nations quite a bit, though most of it is political or just for show rather than out of the good nature of their hearts.

In any event, poverty is a man made phenomenon. The only reason we have children who are starving in some places is because we have people selfishly indulging in consumerism in other places, taking more than they need, and being selfish...

It's really simple... if everyone on this planet took only what they needed to survive and live a moderately comfortable life, everyone would have PLENTY, and not only that, but we wouldn't have any of the environmental problems we have today.

Our fatal flaw as a species, particularly here in more "developed" countries, is our desire to "Have it all". Our views on what is actually needed to live a comfortable life are largely exaggerated due to conditioning and greed. All you need is food, water, basic shelter, and the resources to make other tools/objects as needed, yet somehow here in America a big screen TV and a Dodge Viper have slowly made their way on to that list of "essential needs" even though you could probably feed 50 families for a year with the money it takes to buy those things.

There isn't room on this planet for anyone to "have it all" without chaos emerging. It is crucial for us to learn to consume less so that we can heal the planet as a whole, and eliminate suffering.

But if human's don't strive to be the best, to have the most, to own the things they yearn for then life will be empty. People would not be able to survive without it. We can't simply stop people having what they want, it wouldn't be possible.
It's why Communism failed.
