    Population Growth

I recently watched the movie "Pandorum" and the Earth got destroyed by a rapid growth in population leading to hunger, poverty and eventually a nuclear war.

So what are your thoughts? The estimated world population at the start of the 22nd century the world population is estimated to be roughly at 14 Billion people, more than double what it is now. Think about how you hear about the millions of children dying in third world population countries at just 6.8 Billion. There's a rough estimate by scientist that say the earth can only sustain 22-25 Billion people on earth, so what about in 2200, will that be the end of the world? I asked my science teacher about this and he advised me that there will probably be a huge outbreak of a disease that will kill hundreds of millions or eventually lead up to a nucleus war between continents, the only way to be out of it would be to find another planet to sustain life on, which I think certainly won't be happening anytime soon.

So what are your thoughts on the growth of the population?

Sorry if I sound stupid I'm only 14, but I found it pretty intriguing :s

In principle you're right, but there is nothing to suggest that new viruses or diseases will emerge.
Food shortages certainly are having an affect, particularly in Africa. This is exacerbated by drought and soil salinity, and in the Pacific rising sea levels are already a major issue for the mostly agricultural dependent low lying islands.

However, there is some promising work being done. I read the other day about a genetic modification in rice causing it to grow 10% faster, I'll try and find the source for you later.

There's something called technology. If hundreds of years ago they said there would be 6.8 billion people in 2000, they would have said "Well aint no way we can raise up nuff cattle ta feed that many peeps" but the thing is things change.

What I find interesting is that we can easily use technology to sustain future populations, but the population is holding us back.

For a lack of a better example, let's continue using cows. If we used technology to impregnate all of the female cows in a ranch (think of an involuntary cow sperm bank), we could easily "artificially" breed plenty of cattle to feed the population.

The same example can apply to just about everything else food-related that I can think of. The only problem is that the majority of the population sees this as animal abuse, cow torture, whatever. We are the only things that are holding ourselves back.

If everybody could think logically from a neutral standpoint and throw away those morals, we wouldn't have world hunger.

For those so inclined, I don't believe that the Swine Flu 'outbreak' was a 'population culling' attempt as it was an attempt to push several ridiculous tyrannical bills in and more importantly several billion dollars for Big Pharma.

Artificial is already used, but this is immaterial. There isn't the usable land nor the water to sustain such a level of meat production.

You're missing the point. We could produce more and more meat, as we are today. But current practice is completely unsustainable.

If only all the world's problems could be solved by 'throwing away those morals'.

Oh don't start. It was an unusually dangerous seasonal strain with the potential to wreak incredible damage, much like the 1918 flu turned out to do.

To a degree, but even today millions upon millions of unsupported children die and the population manages to grow.
