Gift card to their favorite restaurant is a great choice. Or if you can figure out something they always mention they wanted. For example my mom has a crappy smart phone, that always freezes. I decided to get her an iphone with her favorite show case (the walking dead). Just put a little thought into what they like, they are your parents they will like almost anything you get them. Get your dad a fleshlight if you're hard

If I had to choose on a universally cool present for all parents, I'd say something like a self-made/designed house accessory. Ie a bird house if they're into birds or a mug if they're big on sitting down to drink their coffee in the morning. You could always prepare Christmas dinner & invite them over instead of them putting something together themselves (assuming they usually make the holiday dinners). Those things would've worked on my parents lol.
