Hey, this news is about a month or 2 old but i just thought i'd share it with some of you who don't live in Australia and therefore wouldn't know anything about it.

A month or so ago, a veteran was told that he was not allowed to fly his Australia flag in AUSTRALIA. The reason he was not allowed to fly it was because it "insulted" one of his neighbours. If he did not bring down his flag then the council was going to fine him.

Ofcourse this created a complete outrage in the community. In retaliation, EVERYONE in that street is now flying an Australian flag and they were given out for free by i think it was a radio station.

It wasn't on the news for too long because i think if anyone found out who made that complaint was going to get killed by a LOT of angry Australians.

I think that the council in that town is a complete disgrace to Australia, no Australian should be restricted to fly their countries flag in their front yard. EXPECIALLY a veteran who fought for his country, to tell him to pull down the flag that he fought under for years is just disgraceful.

If someone doesn't like the Australian flag, then they should GTFO of Australia. If they don't like it, then don't live here. A flag doesn't hurt anyone, how the hell can it possibly be an insult? Its not like its a Nazi flag or something like that.

Well, for all you know, there could have been conflict between the neighbor and owner of the flag, such as racism directed to the neighbor through some sort of jingoistic method, and then the 'erection' of the flag may have finally been a provocative notion.

The press covers a lot of things up, particularly when they're being biased and they know they can get a lot of support from people in their country.

While thats a possibility, it seems unlikely. The person who called the council was anomunous and the flag guy had no idea who made the call so if he had a conflict with a neighbour he'd probably know who it was.

Also he had been flying his flag for years and had an actual proper metal flag pole in his yard. Considering their not cheap, i doubt he put it in just to annoy his neighbour.

Ah alright, fair enough. You probably know a lot more about it than I do - I was just trying to find a feasible explanation.

Hahah yeah i thought so, you always mention the other side of the story which is good since otherwise debates would be incredibly boring :). I wouldn't expect you to know too much if anything about this anyway since you don't live in Australia (or so your location indicates).

Even if you did live in Australia i don't think it was national news anyway, so some Australians on sythe might not have heard about it either.

Well, I absolutely believe that this is unreasonable.

I could not see how a nation would do such to a person, and I respect all of those on that street who rose their flags in pride. It is wrong that a council would say this, because I would never listen to what they said.

If I had an Australian Flag right now, I'd raise it just for them.

If I were to be told not to raise my American Flag, then I'd tell them to GTFO, because this is America, a nation for all.

.... That probably didn't make any sense at all >.>

Don't worry, it made sense :p.

Also Australia is supposively a "free" country. If it weren't then i could understand if it were against the laws or something like that.

Even though i live in Australia, if someone rose a Chinese flag in their street i really wouldn't care. Its simply showing your devotion and respect to your country. It has nothing to do with anyone else.

Well if Australia and China were at war i wouldn't be too happy, but under current circumstances i'd be fine with it.

this world is pretty outrageous.

Plus 1, dude. I agree that it's pretty pathetic, and it's kinda hard not to. I personally think there's much more interesting news that should be talked about though, tbh. I know I'm not Australian, but if something like this happened in America, it would definitely blow over quite fast...

As outrageous as it may of seem you would be surprised how far news team stretch the truth on things by just adding simple phrases such as "[whoever] was not available for an immediate conversation"

Last year some kids thought it would be funny to write in the bathroom "everyone is gunna die a week before Christmas break" to try to get an extra week for Christmas, and some bitch mom went to the newspapers about it, and the article said the message was referring to virginia tech and other horrible shootings, portraying it as a whole death threat message when it was only 10 words long.

When a reporter reports on something, they could care less how true to the story they are they just want something that will make there editor go "wow great story ! "

but if something like this happened in America, it would definitely blow over quite fast...

Couldn't agree more. America is the type of country that only makes a big deal when THEY think it's a big deal. However if someone did this on my block, "I" would think its a big deal. But then again, what do I know? Regardless of what would happen in America I think its disgusting that the council would do that, especially to a veteran? Man, this world is slowly starting to slip away..
