Movie sequels better than the original?

I saw a post in this thread where someone said sequels are almost always worse than originals. What do you think? What sequels can you think of were better than the original?

 

I think the Bourne trilogy, Underworld trilogy, and Hannibal series are examples of them getting better or at least being on par.

 

I preferred The Dark Knight over Batman Begins. Also Terminator 2: Judgement Day, however that is a rather subjective topic.

 

The new True Grit was a lot better than the old one. Old westerns are pretty lame in my opinion.

 

@Dimethyl: I'm sorry you feel that way. You obviously haven't seen very many old westerns.


I liked the second Mad Max movie more then the first. Also The Dark Knight was far superior then Batman Begins (as said in an above post).

 

I liked the new Dark Knight as well and I also think the new Planet of the apes sequel was a lot better than the old one.

definately star wars and harry potter, but i also liked the dark knight

 

The Lord of The Rings trilogy. I think all three films are good. Star Wars was good but apart from maybe episode III, the older ones were the best.

 

I liked terminator 2better than 1. but 3 was okay and4 was bullshit.

 

The Hang over 2 comes close to beating the first one but 90% of the time the first is better than the second.

 

IMO, I prefer Aliens over Alien.

 

I think Star Wars and Harry Potter are good examples. Not many are better though =/ Usually they are worse or just about even. The sequels tend to be corny.

They aren't ALWAYS worse, for instance i thought harold and kumar Guantanamo was the shit
However, in a LOT of cases the remakes are just attempts at revenue this is a pretty big problem with cinema i feel..
