List of RSNs not to buy

After I managed to lose yet another name of mine to a scammer it came to my attention that name sales could use it's own stickied thread with nothing but names to at least have caution about before buying. With name releases, name sales is obviously the #1 group of threads. Of course proof of the being scammed would need to be implemented and verified before a name was added to the list. Also I'm aware of all the report someone here/report someone there threads but are there really any just for names? If so, I would love a link to it and have wasted my time on this suggestion. Just a thought.

A lot of work to do, you say? There's a lot of things that take a lot of work to do and the actual point is to keep the community safe and engage in activities that can help protect members from getting scammed. If they did the "accounts to NOT buy" thread then I don't see why we can't implement this? It seems like a good idea and not only that, it can be community ran so ideally anyone can set it up as long as constant updating when need to be happens.

 

It would have to be sustained by a non staff member. The most they can do is sticky it.

 

I would actually support this, a list of names that have been sniped/scammed (not accounts) hence if anyone is caught selling that name they would be banned or whatever.
Would need a process to confirm that the name has actually been sniped/scammed though.

There's a reason why they're inactive, because mods are too "busy" (*cough*) to continue such a list.

For me, it doesn't matter if it's added or not. I just posted the probable outcome of what staff think.

 

Doesn't work, name could have been transferred six times since put on the list and be in the hands of one of the most trusted people.

No point, a pain to maintain and doesn't really help prevent scams.

 

Probably be good to have one for rare names, and not so much every single account that is sold here. There was one years ago before emails were used for logins, and before name changes.

 

This would have been a wonderful idea, but it's been done before. When I was a lurker there was a gigantic thread stamped with "do not buy" as the title, a list of "Rare" usernames were displayed and the "person" who scammed them was showcased next to the name.

However many of the more trusted users somehow acquired these names from these scammers and were selling them as their own (I DONT BOT) for example

Many others who had a name shop also posted their competitors names on that thread warning users not to buy from them

Such a waste. I have made a suggestion to let someone else run the name thread but it got locked before anyone could even see it. Mods very very rarely update that list.

A pain for who? 5/6 of those people could've been scammed when there only needed to be one.

After looking at the "accounts not to buy" this is an entirely different concept. Rare names are rare for a reason, the seller won't change the name whereas the "accounts not to buy" list can easily be altered in-game. If a name seller scams someone for the name "God" he's not going to change the name because he would be forfeiting it to someone else. The name could be added to a list for all to check before they buy it.

After the scam report, the moderator who dealt with the report could just copy the name and add it to the list.

100% support this idea.

 

I think this idea is good in theory, however it would be a bit hard for upkeep, and for that reason I don't think it is very viable.

 

Why don't you start a thread like this? If it catches attention it will be stickied

The mods could just add the sticky to the Name Sales subforum and then edit it as the new reports come in.

 

Make it a google doc input form so you dont have to sift through posts, and just update it like once a day/week yourself. Saves everyone time. The folks at xp-waste use a similar thing to update their dg records; check that out if you want.

 

This, and display names can instantly be transferred to someone else, so this type of thread wouldn't work because the scammer could just sell the display name and the new owner wouldn't be a scammer.

 

Wouldn't want to have to go through that, then have a biased mod auto-lock it.

That's for accounts ....10 names get sold per the one account sold. There is a big difference. and we both know they wouldn't do that.

If it was, proof could be given by the legitimate owner that he/she owned it.

 

What if it was merged with the Filtered Display Names Thread?

I mean, technically you shouldn't buy names listed there since they can't be transferred.

Plus it would help not clutter the front page with stickys.

If the name changed hands from the scammer to a more reliable person, then the name should be removed provided they have sufficient proof that they are the new owner.

Also here's an idea, what if we had a dedicated Name Sales mod(s) that could help out with this stuff?

 

A dedicated name sales mod would be awesome. I just don't know who would be suited. Also, merging it sounds Like a good idea, would just need to change the thread name.
