Need some social issues for a speech class.

So a few weeks from now I'm going to do a speech on a specific social issue. Its going to be 5-7 minutes long. Do you guys have any specific topics you think I could use?

The first idea I had in mind was the issue on the ISIS killing of a Jordanian pilot which spread all over the news a few days ago.

Not really sure what social issue entails, but could go with something like "Why marijuana should be legalized" , "Should methadone still be used as a treatment", or "should DDT be used to reduce malaria in africa". Pretty basic ones you'll find a lot of information on.

 

I wouldn't pick ISIS the Info is so limited and will last you 2 mins at best.

As bogla said, "why weed should be legalized" would be a great topic. Theirs plenty of information about its benefits in all areas of life, its medical side and its personal use side

 

He said that his professor didn't want that. Let's be honest, the "legalize marijuana" topic in college is soooooo over done and been done time and time again over the last ~10 years. You need something fresh that you can focus on that isn't the most current so that there is at least a good amount of information about it.

 

Maybe something about religion? Don't know how much of a touchy subject that is in your area though.

Do you have any ideas in mind? Striking up a topic on religion wouldn't be such a good idea though.

I particularly find the caste system in India fascinating. Look it up, I think you will too, especially if you're unfamiliar with it. Seems pretty original too!

Remember it can be easier to argue against your own opinion, make it more convincing etc

You could try talking about science research and ethics. Would be an interesting topic, especially if you picked a specific issue. Perhaps, animal usage for experiments? Or something that is controversial, interesting, or has good pros and cons.

In relation to social issues, you could tie in the science field to benefits to the society or something like that--if it's applicable--or what issues it brings. There's many different ways to do it.\
