need help with installing a desktop environment on ubuntu vps

Tried a lot of stuff but i keep running into errors.
i used this guide; How to Install and Configure VNC on Ubuntu 16.04 | DigitalOcean

ssh -L 5901:127.0.0.1:5901 -N -f -l root server_ip_adress
after trying to connect i get "
bind: Address already in use
channel_setup_fwd_listener_tcpip: cannot listen to port: 5901"

I am not an IT professional in anyway so dont kill me when I say something incredibly stupid, but have you tried to 5901 port to something different?

i actually just tried that and it didn't give the error. but when i connect to a vnc i just get an empty page and the desktop environment doesnt seem to work

Make sure that there is not already a VNC service running, your port is already in use.

When VNC is first set up, it launches a default server instance on port 5901. This port is called a display port, and is referred to by VNC as :1. VNC can launch multiple instances on other display ports, like :2, :3, etc. When working with VNC servers, remember that :X is a display port that refers to 5900+X.

Because we are going to be changing how the VNC server is configured, we'll need to first stop the VNC server instance that is running on port 5901.
