Name sniping

Problem is how can you prove it. I've had several rare names stolen from me, including a one letter name.

 

i think if its not on sythe its fair game, but if the name has been sold on sythe it deserves a ban.

 

I have had Axe and Fb "sniped" from me. Axe was due to lack of knowledge and the correct procedure on name xfering. While with FB i waited over 2 months to xfer it over, had my laptop and desktop computer ready to go an it was taken withing 1 second.

Later i was told that i should have waited for a RS update. Buying names has been an expensive experience for me. I should also mention that TV offered me various other names (out of pure good will).

 

My objection to this rule is similar to that of the proposed rule against luring: runescape account names are not property; therefore, the 'sniping' of them cannot be considered theft. I'm also confused as to how this rule would be enforced. If I attempt to sell a name that was at one point sniped, am I to be banned? How can one prove that such a name was sniped, rather than merely sold?

 

Regardless if it is on Sythe or not. Its not considered property. You own the name while its in your possession. . When you xfer it. It is technically not yours anymore.

 

It's a display name for a virtual game. Get over it. It's just as pathetic as oG Gamertags. Sniping isn't necessarily stealing. People 'snipe' items from GWD. If you weren't quick enough to transfer your name you clearly don't deserve it. It's not hard to keep a name secret from public if your going to transfer it. More than likely someone who's not on sythe 'sniped' the name.

 

Agreed. If someone were to get punished for doing this, that would be complete B.S.

 

if you buy a name what are you buying? the name. so technically it is yours.my good friend was banned for this.

So you are saying that would be legitimate to file a police report for theft if someone sniped your name?

 

there is a name sales section for a reason, so technically you are purchasing a name.

 

You're buying the login information to an account with that name. The account, as well as the name, remain the property of Jagex.

Using this logic it means I can steal an account and face no repercussions or at least I shouldn't, it isn't theirs - it isn't property. If they have this name, it is to their benefit and they, with the name transferring system, have the right to now sell it to another party. It is the way that the entire system of any RS or MMO blackmarket works. We don't personally own the property but we have control of the items and we have given it value so that it can be traded to one another.

 

Yeah, if you get banned from RS you cant take the name with you. Therefore its really not your property.

Yes, it's difficult to catch a name sniper, but all it takes is a bit more effort and investigation. If you're willing to go the extra mile to get the culprit, you may just get him:

Currently working on another one, and I'm hoping it will further enforce the implementation of a rule against it.

 

I think implementation of this rule would be stupid. Talk via PM if you dont want to get sniped. Simple as that.

A few of my names have been stolen/sniped, but I don't complain.
Though, the rules should be clear, and they are not.

 

I might have exaggerated it a bit on them being "trustworthy and loyal", but I believe O_R_L_Y and someone else (forgot their name) who were both pretty well known sythers were both banned for sniping names.

Why did this happen when there isn't a rule against it?
