I can tell you were I'm not
A good game has not just a good storyline, but a good past. It's what gets you hooked. In runescape back when I played it, I loved and enjoyed the quests that were based around the concept of past runescape, with the gods, heroes and such. The problem is it wasn't really applied to the actual gameplay, only during quests.

I love games like age of mythology, because the universe around you is real. You play an untold part in Greek mythology with its own unique storyline, but at the same time, events happen around you that actually occurred in Greek mythology. I don't like Age of empires as much because you don't feel like you are part of the game, your just playing the game. It is in it's own universe, but has no real history to it. Of coarse there are little battles and things that took place that are in the game, but it seems more of a coincidence then a storyline.

Another great thing I absolutely loved was Too Human. They took Norse mythology but placed it in the future. Your playing as a cybernetic God with powers, ancient and futuristic weapons (such as guns, and swords). The entire game is based off of real Norse mythology, and only sometimes does it go off the main path and make its own things up (besides the futuristic addition). The whole ancient storyline is their but with a modern twist that made for a great storyline.

I don't think that we should go along the lines of greek/roman/norse/egyptian mythology though. One of the things I loved about runescape was the fact that it had its own past, created from scratch and based on nothing. I would go the extra mile to feel like that I was actually more of a actual person in the game, like only getting the zamorak cape, robes, book, symbol, etc. It made the roleplay better.

The mythology for the Sythe MMO needs to be consistent throughout the game. Such as a player selects a God to worship, and that decision effects the rest of the game. For example: (If this was runescape). I would choose zamorak or another god to worship, and then in someway it would signify me as the worshiper of that god, and I would get certain "perks" for worshiping that god. Perks that would effect the entire gameplay, like less runes are required for different spells depending on your god, or you gain a little more exp then normal in certain skills, quests are different and the outcomes are different.

The MMO needs to also have a past history. Vague at first, but then becomes clearer and clearer as the player gets to certain "checkpoints" (such as quests). As the player progresses, more perks become available. When and if the player ever finishes the history, he can choose to be reborn or something along those lines and choose to worship another god instead. Switching back and forth between gods is also a very excellent option. Basically a game with multiple storylines that all intertwine.

In my years of gameplay, it is the storyline and past storyline that is the addicting part of the game.

To OP "I would get certain "perks" for worshiping that god. Not only that but people would feel more into the game such as WoW how they treat each other(but instead of OrcvHuman it would be GodvGod)

We gotta rethink what we are working with tho.
