My New Gaming Computer + 27 inch Asus Monitor [Bought on Craigslist]

A few days ago I bought this gaming computer + a 27 inch Asus monitor on craigslist, I paid $400 for everything.

My friend who is good at building computers said I got a super good deal.
The graphics card alone is worth $379.99+tax brand new, a used one is worth around $300

    Paid $400 for everything below
    -----------------------
CPU: AMD FX-6300 Six-Core Processor 4.13 GHz (Overclocked)
    Motherboard: ASUS M5A97 R2.0
    Storage: 240GB Kingston SSD
    RAM: 8GB Kingston HyperX FURY (4GB x2)
Graphics: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/nvidia-...-card-silver-black/9855169.p?id=1219441201895)
Powersupply: CORSAIR CX series CX600 600W
    27 inch Asus Monitor VP279
Mouse: Logitech G303 Daedalus Apex Performance Edition Gaming Mouse
    -----------------------

When I got home my friend came over we tested the gaming computer everything worked, we decided to dust it out. He unplugged the graphics etc, then once we dusted out the computer he put it back together. Then i go to turn it on and it doesn't turn on. we heard some tick noise and the graphics card spines a bit then stopped. The computer wont turn on. He told me he thought the power supply had died. The power supply was a 600WW CORSAIR CX series CX600.

Luckily I had a 750W Antec power supply in my old gaming computer. He took apart my old gaming pc and changed the power supply and put it on the new computer and everything works. Then we added my other SSD and HDD and a 4GB ram stick from my old computer to my new one. I looked up the graphics card and it needs a min of 500W power supply to run. Do you guys think the 600W power supply was underpowered or what caused the computer not to start because before we dusted the computer everything worked.

This is my gaming computer now and I'm using my ASUS VG248QE Black 24" Gaming Monitor, 144Hz 1ms (GTG), 3D Monitor

CPU - Terrible, overclocked a lot without water-cooling, good luck. You're going to throttle your PC, your CPU is far worse than your GPU.

Motherboard - Cheap, ton of problems with that ASUS model.

Storage - Decent SSD, doesn't compare to the newer models. Should work well.

RAM - 802MHz? It's 2016. Upgrade that shit before you have a memory leak.

GPU - The card is $300 new, not $380 lol. I have the same one, make sure you are powering it with separate 6-pins or you'll fry your PSU.

Monitor - Decent, can't ask for better for such a low price.

Mouse - Never heard of it.

Good luck, let me know how that CPU goes without water-cooling.

    60hz or 75hz doesn't even come close to 144hz when gaming :)

    I like playing COD2 on a 144hz monitor.

What do you mean by "RAM - 802MHz? It's 2016. Upgrade that shit before you have a memory leak." Whats wrong there? I got 12gb of ram

I also have a Cooler Master Hyper 212 with fan on it to cool the cpu. Im not sure if its exactly the cooler master hyper 212 but its something like it.

As for the gaming mouse I like it alot. http://www.amazon.com/Logitech-Daedalus-Performance-Edition-910-004380/dp/B00TKFD51M

Also the gtx 970 is a reference card, its $379.99+tax https://www.google.com/search?q=900...69i61l2j69i60.87j0j4&sourceid=chrome&ie=UTF-8

Running at 802 mhz is still a good speed, if you knew anything about how dram works you would know it doesn't effectively pick up 1600mhz, which is what they are running at.

Using different cables to power the GPU will not make a difference lol. And it retails for more than $300. Do some research before you post.

He is right about one thing, the CPU is the bottleneck in this build, but it's still a great PC for the price and you got a badass monitor for nothing. This is really a steal for what you paid.

There is far better ram, don't bullshit. Maybe with that shit mobo ddr3 802 runs fine.

You can easily fry your shit if you power it with 2 6pins from one wire (aka a splitter, etc.)

I did research, this genius says "what's wrong with my ram I have 12gb," so I assumed his video card had 2gb memory, not 4gb. Those ARE $300 if you aren't retarded enough to pay full retail price.

It is a steal regardless, the monitor itself is worth a decent bit.

My old computer had a better motherboard ASUS M5A99X EVO
My current computer has ASUS M5A97 R2.0 motherboard yes its a step down but I'm not about to put a 3 year old motherboard lol.

My old computer is like 3 years old or more and i used it everyday mostly so I didn't want my friend to change the motherboard / wiring.

Speccy reads the RAM as being 802 MHz, its dual ram so the set is 1600Mhz, which is a fine amount to have, 1600MHz is what most computers have, its not really worth paying more unless you decide to switch to DDR4 alltogether on a new Motherboard and CPU.

You are right there is far better ram, but ddr3 802 is not a thing try linking me to one module that actually RUNS at that. 1600 mhz ram is better than most ram installed by manufacturers infact it used to be the standard gaming ram just a couple of years ago, aka when this PC was built.

As I mentioned earlier do some research you would see there are enough connectors for the graphics card without the use of any splitting. And this was the previous PSU, it is now upgraded unsure about the model. 600w was probably not enough power with the overclocking, but before it was overclocked it should have handled it just fine.

And also the cheapest I see for the GTX 970 is about $330, and that's for THIRD party graphics card.

There is no such thing as a 970 with 2gb of vram, that's a 960.

The reference ("nvidia") cards are actually a bit worse than a normal 970 unless you're looking to SLI. The cooling systems are a bit worse than those that come on most other cards, it's only advantageous because they blow the air to the side as opposed to straight above it.

Nvidia doesn't make any of their own cards, so there is no such thing as a "third party" 970. IIRC PNY makes the 970 reference cards, and you can't really find them anywhere besides BBY and when they randomly pop up on newegg. Because of this, that $380 pricetag is really inflated. I will agree though that unless you wait on a nice sale, you're not going to find a 970 for under ~315.

Nice man! Can't believe you got it for so cheap. Even though I personally prefer a bit more SSD storage, it's still a nice overall build.

    Buncha salt in this thread

    1. No, that CPU won't bottleneck. It's a shit CPU but you need to be running something in the region of a Celeron to bottleneck a GPU. It'll underperform on CPU-heavy tasks but it will not at all bottleneck that GPU.

    2. Motherboard - @OP, keep it til it conks out. If it works it works. You won't notice performance dips on a shitty motherboard but they just don't last as long, so you might have to replace it in a year or two.

    3. Like others have said, Speccy doesn't show full RAM frequency. I've got 1600MHz on my laptop and it clocks in on Speccy at 798MHz, and that's single channel. It doesn't get divided if you have dual channel, it's simply operating frequency (afaik).

    3. Air cooling works just fine on an OC'd 6300. It'll still run hot, but because AMD CPUs always run hot, they're built to take a lot more heat. Shouldn't be a problem.

Anyway overall OP you scored one hell of a deal. If you get a couple hundred bucks at some point I'd replace that shit CPU with an FX 8xxx, but otherwise you got a very good find there. I'd seriously consider just that monitor and the GPU to be a good deal for $400 lol.
