Windows XP is still one of the most stable and easy to use OS'es in my opinion.
I'd take Windows XP if I were you

XP, but honestly XP is boring compared to Vista. I thought.

Linux is fun for awhile, I'm not gonna name the Cons cause I'll get a flame war started about crap.

An operating system SHOULD be "boring". Its only job is to create an environment for applications and drivers to execute on and to provide you with a point-and-click interface, and should you want to make changes to it, it should be customizable. That's why I prefer XP.

Really the question is upto you to answer what is the best OS...
People have their own opinions, try researching for some OS's and compare them with one another... ^_^

I personally recommend Mac OS X Leopard. But if you're a Windows guy and are willing to wait, Windows 7 seems quite promising. (20% faster boot time than Vista and a few tweaks here and there. But the UI got a little uglier imo).

Depends on what you use it for.

    Gaming? Go XP.

Work? Go Vista or Mac OS X/Leopard.

    Both? I suggest a dual-boot.

Installing more then one operating system on the same computer, very common to do with people who use Linux with XP for Gaming or applications they need for work.

You choose the Operating system you want to use when you start up your computer.

Also, there is not and never will be a "Most Effective OS", people will always have there opinions. So far, Vista has been the best os in my opinion but your going to have to try a variety and choose what you think suits you best.

It's possible to install more then four operating systems on a single computer, but only a few really have a legitimate reason for doing that.

Windows XP is best IMO. Vista has to many bugs still. I have a program on this computer that boosted me up to Vista Pro for free (from basic Vista).
