I personally lost a family member at 9/11. To hear that there are plans to build a mosque on ground zero is very insulting to me and millions of others. They have plenty of other places to build it were they could get more visitors. But all it's for is attention.

All the more reason for this to be approved. Now there is absolutely no problem with building this community center.

How is it "too soon". This happened almost 9 years ago. Regardless, there isn't anything wrong with it. Period.

is it not there property? Last time i checked when someone owns a piece of land they are allowed to build on it without big brother telling them No(within zoning laws). The only reason they do not want them to build there is because "Extremist Muslims" attacked the world trade center. In fact that these "Extremists" that attacked the world trade center do not even practice any of the 5 pillars of islam.

It's a violation of the group's civil liberties to prevent them from building the mosque. I see no problem with it personally.

It's not a statue of Bin Laden, it's a mosque.

    It's not on ground zero.

It gets the attention it's given.

I agree with you. It was just that Tyro said Muslims weren't responsible for the 9/11 attacks, the US Government was.

    @Tyro
Please prove that. What part of the US government? And remember, Motive is not evidence.

I know that in America we believe that you can worship what ever god you want, where ever you want. Freedom of speech. But at the same time I don't think they should be able to build a mosque right where people in THEIR religion killed hundreds of americans. I think America needs to think more about their safety then not offending the muslims. Letting them build there is almost like forgiving them for what they have done. I don't think they deserve that.

For the 100th time they don't build this at were the towers were standing...

And why blame 1.5 Billion Muslims for what like 10 people did...you are making it look like every Muslim is a terrorist and is a danger for the US.
Besides i bet 95+% of the crime in the US is cause by non Muslims.

I would have no problem with it as extremists make up very little of the Muslim population, though it makes me uneasy to think that the people who planned it could be celebrating in that mosque, and a victory over America..Though on the other hand denying it would seem in-just and therefor pushing its agenda.

I say over all I think it should be allowed as there is more pro's than cons though the whole matter is rather unsettling.

^ This. We cannot blame an entire population for a few idiots. Only a few did it..if a few Americans steal would we want our entire populous to be stereotyped as thieves? Of course not.

I don't think many of you are looking at what's important here. Yes, the rights given to citizens of this country allow them to build their mosque there. The real question is why they would want to.

-First of all, it is a mosque. Yes it's also community center, but it's still a mosque. There is no getting around that.

-It may not be on ground zero, but it's two blocks from it. For those of you who haven't lived in an urban setting, there are usually around 8-10 blocks in a mile. That means that it's at most a quarter mile from the site. That's pretty damn close.

-As someone else mentioned earlier in this thread, history shows that Muslims often build mosques where they've conquered territory.

-It is NOT an attempt to make peace between the Americans and Muslims. If that was ever their intention, then Forrest Gump is a genius compared to them. Nobody in their right mind would expect peace to come out of this inappropriate, distasteful gesture.

-It's set to be open on September 11th, 2011. If they had any discretion or good intention in them, they wouldn't have it open anywhere near this date.

If it isn't clear to you that this is just another cheap trick to get publicity, it's because you've been fooled into thinking that Muslims are the victims of widespread hate. Nobody is saying that all Muslims are terrorists. We're just acknowledging the fact that the terrorists were Muslims. Not only were they Muslims, but their interpretation of the religion played a large role in their motivation to attack us. There isn't anything wrong with the religion itself, but there is a considerable number of Muslims that conform to the beliefs of the terrorists. Don't make it try to make it sound like it's only a few, because it's actually a couple thousand. I can link a source if necessary.

Don't bother replying to my post if your intention is to downplay my argument and depict my thoughts as the result of stereotyping, because I can assure you I'm not prejudice towards any religion. Most would consider me Agnostic.

You fail to provide any sort of support or evidence to any of your arguments, from what I've read. This is no exception. If you want people to hear what you have to say, it's wise to use words like "because".

I don't think you even know what you're talking about, because Al Qaeda is far larger than 10 people. About the crime rate, that's probably because Muslims are so scarce in this country.

I personally hate that they would do something stupid like this. I do not support these actions at all. I hope they build a gay bar right across the street from them Muslims.

Their religion is the reason it's "ground 0". Stupid for even thinking of it.

I think that this is despicable. On 9-11, 19 hijackers killed 2,976 for their Muslim beliefs. Introducing anything Muslim into the matter near the site of a major act of terrorism for the sake of radical Muslim beliefs is just out of the subject. Move it to a far different location, it's almost as if you're just mocking the 3,000 people who died that day and saying yes to it.

Al Queda aren't all Muslims. The people who bombed the tower were extremists, less than probably 2% of Muslims are terrorists, the same applies with any other religion. Why shouldn't they build one if its a multiracial society?

Al-Qaeda has nothing to do with why people hate Muslims so badly.....the only reason they hate Muslims is because of the 10ish people who caused the 9/11 attacks if that didn't happen no one would hate Muslims or even know what Al-Qaeda was.

The person building the mosque. Changed the discussion very quickly from the mosque. To him verbally attacking America.
