Minecraft Creator's Next Game Unveiled - "Scrolls"

Mojang, the Stockholm-based studio responsible for last year's indie hit Minecraft, has lifted the lid on its new project.

Called Scrolls, it's several worlds away from the open-ended pixel-art experience of Minecraft, a game that's sold over one million copies even though it's still technically in development. Jakob Porser, Scroll's lead designer, explained the concept on the game's official site.

"Five years ago, me and Markus 'Notch' Persson started talking about a game we felt was missing in the gaming market," said Porser, "A game we desperately wanted to play, but was unable to as it had not yet been developed. The game we envisioned had elements from the collectible card game genre as well as from traditional board games. It would be a strategic game with a strong foundation in tactical game play but with a touch of random and chance guaranteeing a never ending stream of curve balls."

In essence a card game taking place on a dynamic board, Scrolls is to place an emphasis on competition, promising tournaments, leagues and potentially a world championship.

How it actually plays remains a mystery as Mojang is at present keeping Scrolls close to its chest. RockPaperShotgun had a chance to delve a little deeper with the studio, and revealed that Mojang is planning to get Scrolls into a paid beta on Mac and PC by either November or December this year.
