Recently, a video of two scammers became viral because of the situation, in which a person gets lured of his partyhat because two of his supposed "friends" took him into a clan wars dangerous zone.
This is the link:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZpY9Hk7UE1U
Recently, there was an incident in which PlzNate banned a user for attempting to sell names that are imposters for legitimate hosts in the "Dragon Dyce" (not 100% sure, but it was some legitimate clan chat). His reasoning for this was that it was scamming in game, which is not tolerated under Sythe rules.
Let us examine the Methodology and Effects of these 2 incidents:

Methodology:
ClanWars: The two people most like worked for a long time together talking to a person (through Skype) to gain their trust. This person, after lowering his guard, agrees to conduct an interview with them in clan wars. After they are in, they proceed to kill him (in the dangerous zone.)
DD Imposter: A person has several usernames that piggyback on a legit clan chat. People might mistakenly see the wrong name, and give money to the wrong person.

Effects:
ClanWars: As displayed inside the video, the person who spent possibly YEARS mining rune and other methods to get his yellow partyhat lost it to the lure. He starts becoming emotional, and crying.
DD Imposter: A person has the potential to make an amount of money depending on a person's bet, and the person who was scammed might become (majorly) upset.

Conclusion:
I believe that the effects of both of these methods are identical to the common goal of Scamming, which the dictionary defines as:
1. A ploy by a shyster to raise money.

2., A fraudulent business scheme. To scam means to victimize: deprive of by deceit; "He swindled me out of my inheritance"; "She defrauded the customers who trusted her"; "the cashier gypped me when he gave me too little change"

3. A confidence trick, confidence game, or con for short (also known as a scam) is an attempt to intentionally mislead a person or persons (known as the mark) usually with the goal of financial or other gain. The confidence trickster, con man, scam artist or con artist often works with an accomplice called the shill, who tries to encourage the mark by pretending to believe the trickster.

Looking at number 3, the Dragon Dyce imposter definitely falls under this category, but doesn't a lure do as well? Most lures (even the JoJo3000) depended on a person trusting that the other scammer was legitimate in giving away money, or conducting an interview, or some other reason. The effect of it is the same, one person (or team) wins, and one person gets robbed.

If you look at it in that perspective, the person who was trying to sell Dragon Dyce accounts was in fact, arguably creating a "lure" on people who wanted to dice by setting up accounts that would stand on top of the legitimate hosts. His methodology might not take as long as a lure would, but his intentions, to unfairly gain money through devious methods, is the same as a lurer.

I respectfully ask the staff to consider this proposition, and make clear boundaries as to what is allowed, and what is not. Furthermore, I request that the staff re-examine the ban of the person who was involved in the Dragon Dyce incident, as it was never clearly stated in any part of the site what constitutes Scamming, and what doesn't.

Thanks

Note: I am in not, in any way, affiliated with the person accused of scamming with the Dragon Dyce methods. This was not written as a defense or appeal for him, but rather, as a request for Sythe staff to re-examine their position about luring, and scamming in general.

its a good point. they are basically the same offense. plus if we don't allow scamming in game, how come we allow botting and gold buying? they both break rs rules
I think the reason why cheating and scamming are different is because cheating does not DIRECTLY hurt anyone in particular, but causes inflation which hurts everyone a small amount. Sythe allows this because it is what its very principle was based on.
Scamming is not allowed because it is directly causing one person to lose a possibly significant amount of money (IRL too).

It's actually quite similar, but it's also not. The imposter method almost never works, but when it does it requires someone to not pay attention. I don't think someone will fall for it.

Luring actually requires a lot of preparation, and is almost an art. It really is hard to lure someone.

Think that's the only difference, really.

I had done the same thing, tried to make Luring on this site not allowed. I believe it went to over 50 posts. As much belief that people have that luring IS scamming and should be bannable. It's not going to happen.

Nothing will be done about this, it's always suggested to make luring not allowed here.

Unfortunately, it won't happen.

Adding this to the DNS list. Has been discussed in SL to death and the decision we have reached is final. No more luring discussion please.
