Going to School

Sooo....i'm really wanting to go to school for graphic design.....(with a side degree of marketing maybe) BUT i have no experience with photoshop or C4D, so...i guess what i'm asking is...when i go to school for those, what kind of classes would i be looking to take, and do i need any prior knowledge to using photoshop or c4d or whatever they would have me using?

I really would love to start getting into making graphics for websites, and my favorite part of being a graphic design degree would be producing high quality logos for call of duty teams, and owning a "business" for graphics, and product branding....

soooooooo any tips/tricks/ideas/help would be appreciated! Thanks

Well if you're looking to get into professional graphics I would definetly start familiarizing myself with Photoshop and Illustrator for sure as those are major mediums through which designers make graphics these days. You would want to stay from the graphics carried out on forums like these as they are more of the 'amateur' type. I would personally start with become a freelance designer trying to get things done with many different people and see what you like to do best and hopefully you could catch someone's eye eventually.

How along the lines can i find a "class" to teach me? I'm a hands on learner, but I can't teach myself, i'm VERY bad at doing that, at least until it comes time for me to make my own stuff but if i have an idea of how to use PS and illustrator and c4d i'll be able to do so

 

Prior to going to a course, I'd recommend knowing the basics of the tools you'll be using, just like any other profession.
I mean, it would be pretty difficult to become a builder if you didn't know what a hammer was, right?
If you aren't an easily self taught person, I'd recommend following tutorials and guides via Youtube or even written ones online.
This way you can familiarise yourself before you invest your money into something.
You also need to realise that Photoshop, Illustrator, and Cinema 4D are only three programs, out of hundreds.
Getting into the professional scene of graphics will require skills in free-hand drawing, calligraphy, and of course a creative mind.

I would say there is no "Class" in my area to learn these kind of things....so is it possible to learn from someone from sythe? Or....maybe should i contact my school's graphic design teacher and maybe see if he could give me lessons?

EDIT: The teacher i'm talking about taught "Digital Art"

 

If you want me to be honest, I don't think you will really find what you're looking for from your digital art teacher. I would maybe contact some professional artists on youtube for lessons?

 

Are you unable to learn through example from watching youtube tutorials?

 

yeah i'm a very hands on learner, i may understand it as im watching it, but i'll forget after i'm done with the video.

 

Are you simply watching the video and then forgetting or are you completing the piece alongside the video?

 

i'd forget doing either one of those Like I said, for a lot of things I need to PHYSICALLY be taught how to do something, my add is bad.

 

That's unfortunate. Especially when classes will likely be expensive and will cover things you will find unimportant as each person has their style when it comes to design and what you are taught might not be for you.

Ultimately I'd make sure that it is something you want to pursue as it sounds like it will be a costly investment.

 

what grade are you in now or are you looking for a collage to go to now?
Edit: if you are still young that is grate i can give you some knowledge that i wish i had be for i started. but iv seem to make it out fine. im going to the #1 graphic sesign school in ohio an i got accepted on the spot after they seen my portfolio.

 

OT: would I be able to see some samples of what you submitted in your portfolio?

Thanks for the reference stuff. Did you model the mac or is it just a render you put your design on to show the background mes en scene?

i'm 19 and graduated highschool last year, i'm just working now but having a real hard time figuring out what i want to do post highschool.

 

if you got enough talent build up a portfolio an apply to a design collage. it will take hard work and dedication tho ill tell you that. btw you might want to hurry idk you might have to wait another year to apply. but if you do try to get about 10-15 pieces of your best work, make them nice an clean an a professional look. post them in the graphics galley an we will help you chose the best ones. but the most important thing is to have a lot of determination! keep that in your mind if your not determined to do somthing you wont accomplish it.
