Hence we see new console titles every year. Same thing applies to online games. You can't keep on producing a game when the generation that grew up on the game or older and no longer interested, and the current generation is interested in the new, flashy, games.

Thus, their niche is gone because new games are taking over and fulfilling the needs of the new generations.

Yeah but Blizzard has other major games out. If people aren't playing WoW they are probably playing Diablo or Starcraft. Jagex on the other hand basically has only Runescape.

There are too many factors related to this data to make any meaningful sense of them.

It's like CoD MW, who plays that nowadays. Everyone's on MW3, I bet the amount of people playing 2 has dropped. Console gaming is taking over, so it's bound to drop.

Not sure how recent that is but I know MOP brought a huge number of traffic onto WoW half the time queue times were well over an hour. Also what does search volume mean? Does that mean how many people visit the website? I know games with clients hardly get the same amount of traffic after registration.

Search volume is the number of times a certain term or keyword was searched. This graph is extremely abstract and doesn't take in to consideration a variety of variables. Although it may vaguely show that interest is declining, search engines are not the only means of searching about something. Also it differs between each generation the interest in games. The game market is always changing as with each new generation a new "mainstream" is set.

Jagex have Funorb still though. The major games are currently Arcanists and Aog. Other than that, the rest of the site is dead.

I'm probably wrong but I think these two things are to blame:

1: Games loose their appeal and become "old news"

2: Access to online multiplayer gaming through consoles has increased dramatically over recent times.

Right now, imagine how many people are on xbox live playing halo 4, after the content is boring there will be a completely new dominant title with completely new gameplay/content. MMO's can update all they want but the content will eventually get boring and they will always be the same game.
