Really like the concept - very much a 'build YOUR ideal phone" with the right companies involved like it mentions I can see the idea taking off.

I still don't think it would overtake standard manufactured phones (e.g I-phone, Samsung) purely on the basis of fashion and desirability. Some people just like to have the most recent/expensive phone from a certain company, regardless of it's functionality, just to say they 'have the latest'. and I think this market is a majority compared to the minority group who just want a practical phone suited for them (my assumption though).

Having said that, this phoneblock concept would be aimed at a more functional/practical users market than that of the 'iphone' market I suspect.

It's an interesting idea but no other consumer good works this way. The closest example I can think of would be the market for building your own computer -- which, while popular, doesn't result in fewer thrown-out PCs.

Good idea, this lets you customize your phone to your liking.. but it seems very hard to actually produce this.

This is a great concept. It would be quite difficult to pull it off and I don't think companies are willing to put the money into it. Why would they make a phone that lasts? That just makes them lose money.

I also don't think it would be all that popular. Not a lot of people build their own computers. Most don't really care and just want that new Mac or that shiny new HP. Only enthusiasts would buy this phone and that would limit its scope.

Creator of the video is not an engineer, he knows nothing about how to make a phone and how this is almost, if not, impossible to make. The creator of the video has "Dave Movies" on his youtube page. It shows he's creative, probably a designer of some sort. Certainly no engineer.

Companies will never work together. Although it's creative and a cool idea, it's not possible to make. I've seen his website earlier today and it was full of grammatical errors which shows he's no professional either. People have brilliant ideas for technology, but they're not as easy to create because they have no clue how to make a phone of such caliber. Anyone can think of an object that's impossible to make, you see it in movies all the time, and how often are they made a real thing? A phone isn't a computer which people can build themselves. This is one man thinking if he can get enough demand for such a phone, engineers will magically create it, but they can't even if they wanted to. This is no different to the pomegranate phone which some people were foolish enough to believe was real.

Good point, for example apple keeps revenue coming in by simply adding minor stuff and reselling the phone

Back in the days everyone settled on essentially one type of personal computer which is why we can build them with such ease today. It isn't out of the question.

Yes. They all do. They want them to break or come out with something slightly newer and better that everyone MUST have.

We are pretty good in technology, but anything close to this would be too much. The ease he suggested of changing the battery, camera etc. Those bloks, which is pretty much the idea isn't achievable anytime soon. At best, it wouldn't be as versatile as he put it, and it wouldn't be as easy just to connect the pieces together. Anything less than what the video shows won't be good enough or comparable to the phones today.

I'm not going to doubt today's technology, no one really believed in a touch screen smartphone when it was announced that there would be such a product, but Iphone broke new barriers with their first iphone. Although I don't doubt it would be possible to make something like this, I just know that it won't be as good as anyone hopes it to be, not even close. But as you said, it's not out of the question.

I think Apith has already covered it pretty well, its kind of interesting to consider to possibility of enthusiast built phones in the future though.

Amazing concept. Doubt it will ever happen unless some freelancer decides to give it a go. Just the nature of a capitalist economy, profit is #1 and the consumers well-being is left by the wayside.

Too many components, and too many things that could go wrong. Plus what would happen if I dropped my phone?

You'd pop off whatever is broken and replace them.

"We need to get the right companies and the right people involved"

This would never happen. The only companies that would do this would be small rural carriers. AT&T and Verizon alone own over 70% of the wireless market, and the closest competitors don't even come close to the number of subscribers. Combining all the other popular phone carriers, and every other rural carrier, it would barely amount to the numbers AT&T and Verizon have. It would never be a strategic move in terms of profit.

If there is enough demand for it, it will happen. There is profit to make, and there is ALWAYS replacements to be had. Think about it, if a phone part goes bad, it's cheap, and affordable for anyone to replace, even at full price. I saw this a few days ago, and phone companies can make so much money off of this, I supported it fully. Completely worth it. Phone companies make most of their profit off of the monthly wages, anyway. Phone upgrades are every two years, but it's to rake in those monthly costs for that long, not to just make people wait. Trust me, $800 for a phone is nothing to a phone company such as Verizon, AT&T, or Sprint.

Might be of interest :), I really like the idea of the phoneblok but I can't see it happening in the future anytime soon. The design looks nice along with the simplicity of upgrading (kind of like lego :p) but I'm sure it would be much more difficult to create in terms of the electronics inside the phone.

Cool. Fantastic idea except for the fact that today's consumers care more about looks than specs.
