Hey there,

So I wanted to know if RS3 still offers the ability to let you download the LEGACY (the JAVA client) for Linux machines. I know it offers the NXT client for Linux but I have no use for that.

Download RuneScape

Let me know below :D Thanks.

You can still download the source code. Try compiling on Linux and see if it works? You might have to make some changes.

Why would you play RS on Linux. Why would you do anything on Linux that has a UI.

Why would you not? What's your point?
Because you can use Windows, whose UI is 10 times more friendly.

My point is there's no good reason to be using linux/unix unless you're working off the command line.

You're either grossly misinformed, haven't ever used Linux, or used Arch and gave up and think that that is every Linux

Also Mac is Unix soooo

I should of been more clear. I mean there's few good reasons to be using an OS other than Windows, Mac or mobile OSs for a daily use computer. I can't think of a good reason to play RS on linux.

Because Linux is free and handles a ton of things better than both Mac and Windows? :P

Most PCs and Macs have the OS preinstalled. If not it's worth buying it. I don't know of any daily use thing linux does better.

Battery usage, threading performance, resource intensity

Just to name 3.

Android has better battery usage and resource intensity. I don't think threading performance is better than Windows or Mac

Android has to do with what here? We're talking about Runescape on Linux.

The basic data structure of a Linux pthread is a process, whereas the Win32 thread is itself the fundamental data structure and a process simply contains/inherits from it. Two layers of abstraction vs. one. A Win32 thread needs manual signalling (which in the hands of a good programmer is admittedly powerful, but obviously not everyone is a good programmer) whereas pthreads offer automatic signalling. Being ignorant of a thread signal can result in some awful deadlock which not only reduces performance but halts the feature altogether until it is reset. Not only that but Win32 threads are recursive, and without stack optimization you're looking at increased memory usage for tasks with shared resource usage.

Why are you fighting this so hard? Linux is a terrific OS and is only inferior to Windows and Mac because of proprietary shit and appealing to the masses.

Android is better at those things than linux. Can't play RS on Android of coarse. I guess if you needed to save a little energy, and can sacrifice features and stability then linux would work. You might be right about the threads, but I'm fairly certain windows is generally much faster. I'm not fighting just have a different opinion. I've used linux before on different PCs and always had interal OS errors and driver issues. Installing applications was a chore. A very small subset of windows apps are available for linux. I know linux is popular and I understand why someone would set up a server on linux or use it for development, but have no idea why someone would use linux as a daily computer unless they're just trying to be cool.

What I'm saying is objective, not subjective opinion. Linux is objectively more performant. Also check out the Linux app store and/or its various package managers next time. You'll find it much easier to use with those tools

I'm pretty sure that's not true. Windows has a ton more money to invest in performance. I tried using the package manager that came installed. It didn't have anything I wanted and a couple things I tried to install didn't work. I remember there was no google drive app, but now it looks like there's a linux version.

I can pull up performance details if you like

Benchmark Analysis: Windows Versus Linux - Ubuntu 11.10 Review: Benchmarked Against Windows 7

"By category, Ubuntu leads with three wins (File Copy Times, Multimedia, and System), while Windows has the upper hand in none. On a per-test basis, Ubuntu wins 11 out of 19 tests and Windows wins eight. Of those, Ubuntu holds six significant victories over Windows' five. Any way you want to cut it, Ubuntu 11.10 beats Windows 7 in cross-platform performance testing."

Here's a Blender benchmark performed by a regular Blender user more recently:
Old war : Windows VS Linux (see my little speed comparison) ;-))

Hm ok guess Linux is faster with some things. I still wouldn't use it as a day-to-day computer.

Android uses a Linux kernel ;) Aloooooot of embedded systems use Linux because it is reliable. Like @Blupig mentioned, threading performance is just straight out better. Windows is a commercial product so inherently there are going to be more built in applications that need to be managed in ready/running state queues. Every process in the system is abstracted as a PCB (process control block) which contain stuff like state (registers, etc.). These extra processes (and the threads / TCBs they contain) cause a hit in performance because they cause many more context switches that would not be there in Linux. Context switches are pure overhead. And the problem with built-in Windows applications are that most of them probably require more kernel level work, and trapping to the kernel takes much longer.

With that being said, I wouldn't use Linux as an OS either. I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of performance for features, which is why Windows is so popular. Its always a tradeoff (Performance/Functionality)

@Blupig did you ever have to build the Nachos OS in one of your classes? I had to this year for operating systems class and since you are from Canada shool also you would probably have to?
