Learning vb6

I wouldn't suggest learning VB6. It's an 11 year old language that will not be updated and will soon die. If you're going to spend time learning a language, might as well learn something that's worth it, such as Java or C++. I'd even suggest VB.net over VB6.

I wouldn't recommend C or C++ as a beginner's language as it is often complex and people don't tend to understand it at all when beginning. I suggest Java or C# as a beginner language, or if you're really lost, Visual Basic .Net.

C was pretty basic for me at least. I'd consider object-oriented programming to be a bit more complex to understand, moreso should be secondary to basic programming first.

 

Object Oriented Programming is easier to understand. It's like saying "Okay, so I have a virtual bicycle, and these are the parts." rather than "Here are the parts, now assemble my goddam bicycle."

You're probably forgetting that this guy doesn't understand the basics of programming yet, so it wouldn't from a fundamental point of view be good to start him off with something as complex as C or C++.

 

Regardless of language I would recommend learning procedural programming before object-oriented programming (OOP) as procedural is easier to follow (line by line) and learning OOP to soon can lead to what I've seen can be an obsession with it and cause people to use it even when its not useful.

 

I really disapprove of learning VB6, it has stopped being updated by Microsoft, and is falling into disuse. I suggest learning an object-oriented-language first, as they are usually easier to learn. Personally, I began with Python, then learned Ruby.Both of those languages form a basis of other languages.

 

Go for C# it's new, easy, powerful, and in great demand.

Yes it is. It's extremely easy, it's powerful to a degree, and it uses Visual Studio, which is easy to use in the first place.

 

Swan... Just because you find something easy does not make it easy for everyone. I admit C# is not difficult but there are more simple languages.

 

It is, however, an ideal beginners language. The only thing one would need to get used to is syntax, and that doesn't take long to learn before it becomes as easy if not easier than VB.

 

AND, the C-Like syntax is in use much more and in different languages than the BASIC syntax.

To summarize this useless thread:

C/C++: Very powerful and extremely useful. Only learn this first if you want a challenge.
C#: Uses more common syntax, easy to follow but can be a little messy. Recommended if you understand basic logistics and want your code to be very detailed.
VB.net: I wouldn't touch this to be honest since it's completely different from anything else out there...It uses common programming mechanics, but the syntax gets you in to bad habits.
Java: Confusing sometimes (see C#), but can be used on all platforms.
VB6: Do not touch.
Delphi: Syntax is easy to understand, highly compatible on Windows platforms, powerful, fast...Perfect for a first language or even a primary one in my opinion.
Other (Python, F#, Boo): Only learn these if you need to, they aren't very popular and most other languages can accomplish what they can do.
