Bullet lodged in roof of car

There is a small (perhaps a quarter of an inch) bullet lodged in the roof of my car. My question is: are there lower-powered pistols capable of lodging a bullet in a car when shooting from arms length, as opposed to breaking through into the car? Also, if someone were to shoot a pistol into the air, when it finally landed, would the bullet still be traveling fast enough to lodge itself into the roof of a car?

    Thanks.

If someone shoots the bullet in the air, it will have it's initial velocity rocket it to a point of 0 velocity. Then it will return to earth with a velocity calculated by it's weight & air-resistance. However, this is directly up/down. on an arc it would likely still retain a lot of it's velocity. Thus, likely capable of lodging it'self into the roof of a car.

If a bullet is fired straight up into the air it would be traveling at about a 90 degree angle and would not have enough speed to penetrate the roof because air resistance on the way back down would prevent the bullet from reaching the initial velocity. If the bullet was fired at anything less than say around a 45 degree angle then it would probably be able to pierce through the roof of a car. If fired at arms length as you explained I think even a .22 would pierce the roof but maybe not penetrate through the metal fully.

Even without air resistance the bullet would not piece on the way down. Dent maybe but each time it would just bounce off.

Wouldnt you also say its possible the bullet was shot normally and that it may have ricocheted off of something else and ended up hitting the vehicle and lodging itself as well? I would say, though highly improbable as all ricochets are, it is possible.

I guess it's possible depending on the gun, but I think a lot of guns/bullets wouldn't have enough initial power to sustain enough energy after ricocheting to lodge itself into metal. Weird things happen all the time though, so the angles or something may have been just right.

Either way, this dude needs to move ASAP. Lol.

Ive heard of people dying from stray bullets so it is very much possible in my opinion. This is why it is illegal to shoot bullets up in the air for celebrating things.

If you fire a gun into the air, the bullet will travel up to a mile high (depending on the angle of the shot and the power of the gun). Once it reaches its apogee, the bullet will fall. Air resistance limits its speed, but bullets are designed to be fairly aerodynamic, so the speed is still quite lethal if the bullet happens to hit someone.
